I want to get my mother a new laptop for Christmas - the one she's got now is like a 500mhz Compaq and ohhh boy is it awful.

I'm broke, so i'd ideally spend around $200 for a laptop, but up to $350 is probably reasonable.
What i'm looking for:
Something basic that can run some form of OSX.
She'd be using the computer for Microsoft Office apps and just general internet browsing, nothing intensive at all.
Need an internal modem, some form of ethernet card would be nice but not necessary.
Needs to at least be able to run off the battery a little bit (half an hour min.) that's one of the biggest gripes with her laptop now- if she takes the power adapter off now, it goes off.

Beyond that I'm just looking for something barebones. I'd rather get her moved to a Mac ASAP. I'll consider anything so long as it generally works - i.e. some sort of working optical drive, a working screen, nearly all keys are there. Something with some form of OSX installed on it would be even better, as we only own Tiger, not sure how an old iBook would run.

So if you have an old iBook sitting around somewhere that you need to get rid of, let me know! I can pay by Paypal, check, or money order but would prefer to use Paypal and ideally see some form of proof that you aren't a scammer.

Thanks!

PS I bet she'd realllly like a Clamshell if anyone has one.

I just bought a nice iBook 500Mhz/10gig HD & Airport from a member of this board (THANKS STEVE! ). It arrived just a few days ago. I maxed out the RAM and loaded up Panther on it and it runs great. You should be able to find a pretty nice iBook 500 or 600 for around the $250-350 range. Max out the ram and it will run OS X pretty well. I've seen the 500Mhz iBooks selling for around the $300 range on ebay here recently, so you should be able to find a nice one for around that price.

Good luck in your search
C-ya,
Kevin
