I know there is Cocktail and MacJanitor, however is there any other utilities one should run to keep Panther up and running.
Norton seems to be out of the race and I don't know all the different Shareware applications there are.
Any Ideas?

Cocktail pretty much covers all the trivial stuff. Otherwise there's DiskWarrior (or Drive 10) for more low-level things like defragging.
Note that you don't need MacJanitor at all if you install anacron, which is available for free via fink.

Thank you very much.
I really don't get the Unix stuff I'm from the old school OS 9.

Diskwarrior doesn't defragment-- you'll need Drive 10 or Techtool for that. But definitely, definitely, make Diskwarrior the first on your list. It saves drives that no other utility will touch.

Oops, I meant TechTool. My mistake.

Another one is Xupport (sadly it is not free anymore).
Personally, I prefer OnyX, anyway.

Sadly, it also looks like something from a junkyard. A Swiss junkyard, I'll grant you, but I'm still not sure I want my computer hanging around with that kind of element.

There's also Macaroni, which among other things runs the cron maintenance jobs automatically when you start up or wake up your machine, if the machine was off/asleep in the middle of the night when the cron jobs are supposed to run. Cool little pref pane.

Vax, hey that is cool -- I thought anacron was only installable via Fink. I think that I like the prefpane access of Macaroni better, but then that is shareware whereas anacron appears to be free...

Just kinda a newbie question here...but I notice that when I repair my permissions and then restart, UT 2004 runs amazingly. But if I have some apps open, decide to play, close all of my apps and start up UT, it's slow as hell again. Is this problem something that Macjanitor takes care of, or do I need to restart to plat every time? (Could this also just be a problem with the UT 2004 demo?)

If you're just using the demo, there's a known bug in the sound that eats processor memory like anything. Don't know if a patch was issued but you can check versiontracker.com or macupdate.com.
If no patch, use the demo options and kill all sound and see if that improves things. And the actual game performs better than the demo, imo.
