I'm still on a PowerBook and want to fill some spare time gaming. How do the following games fare on the last generation PowerBooks?
Prey. Says G5 or Intel recommended, but is built on the Doom III engine. D3 runs at a playable enough 15FPS on my Mac.
Quake IV.
Call of Duty 2. Was good stuff on the XBox360 so I would like this to run well enough.
I have no problem dropping down to 640x480 with low settings if they run and look fine enough.

Can't believe it. Call of Duty 2 plays pretty well on a 1.5Ghz 12" PowerBook. I've been charging around the demo level like a madman. Now I have to check the other demos.

There are many "last generation" Powerbooks under the sun... Clockspeed, 64/128 MB video card, Radeon 9600, 9700?
I have both Prey and Doom3 as demos on my PB1.5GHz/64MB ATI9700 and they run okay in 800x600. I noticed Prey is a bit faster than Doom 3. I also recommend a slight overclocking (around 10%) with e.g. ATICellerator.
Regards
PB.

15fps is playable? Once again why I don't listen to anybody who says a game is playable unless they have timedemo stats.
Quake 4 ran WELL (50-70 fps) on my maxed out quicksilver G4 with dual 1.33ghz g4 and 9800 pro.

Anything that sounds like Doom 3 or Call of Duty scares me in the hardware division.
I want the new The Sims Life Stories that is coming out later this month.

The Mac Collection:
Power Mac G4 Sawtooth at 450MHz, Power Mac G4 Gigabit Ethernet at 400MHz, three Power Mac FW800's at 1.0GHz, MacBook Pro at 2.0GHz, my late father's G3 iMac at 350MHz, an iMac at 500MHz, a PowerBook G4 (12-inch VGA) and a PowerBook 170

I should do some timedemos for accuracy's sake. Doom III is certainly playable at 15FPS in single player mode because it's the kind of game I don't run through because I'm always looking out for what's coming around the corner. This game had to be run at 640x480.
Prey also had to be run at 640x480, bump-mapping on, etc. It's playable but there too much jerking every time the textures have to cache. 64MBs of VRAM isn't enough. This ran slower than Doom III. Personally didn't enjoy the story anyway and spent most of the time playing the arcade games in the bar.
Call of Duty 2 is mighty fine and probably represents the limit of what a 12" 1.5Ghz G4 can run properly. This runs at 1024x768, High Rendering, High Quality Textures, quite smooth to play and feels just as fast as on a XBox 360. However anti-aliasing has to be turned off. 2XAA works but can be jerky when there's too much action. 4XAA causes textures to disappear. Not enough VRAM.
Still haven't tried Quake IV.

You have a 12" machine??? Now that explains it. It's not the 64 MB (I haven't more), that's limiting smoothness, but the card itself - the NVIDIA5200 doesn't look so good against the ATI9700 in the 15" and 17" Books. Prey runs definitely better than Doom3 on my setup.

MacMini G4 1.42 / 80Gb / 1Gb RAM / Radeon 9200 Mobility 32Mb - hooked to the TV.
