She deserves it. Her children didn't.

She thought so, just like you do.

Sadly this is true, you cannot tell that to her children.
However, I feel obligated to rally to her defense. Susan Smith suffered from postpartum psychosis, an accute case of postpartum depression taken to the utmost extreme. She is not the only person to suffer from this and kill her child/children, just the most famous. The only reason I point this out is my wife has suffered from postpartum depression after the birth of our daughter, and had to be hospitalized for her suicidal thoughts. Women who have this illness can enter into a dissociative state where they cannot control their actions but remember them clearly. Unfortunately, my wife had some of those moments. Thankfully, things for my wife have improved through medication, therapy and a postpartum support group.
Susan Smith did not have these resources available to her, and those around her were not educated to look out for the warning signs. So in a way, her crime is also a crime of ignorance on the part of her doctors, friends and family. Not every woman who has postpartum depression gets psychosis, in fact very few do. However, almost every book, article or story focuses on the sensationalism of "The crazy Mom who killed her kids!!". It's wrong. Go easy on her, I feel sorry for her after watching my wife suffer through it, and visiting with other Moms who have it as well. You have no idea of the emotional damage it causes and the incredible guilt of ever having thoughts of hurting your baby.

No, I don't get to act on what I think who deserves what. When I'm simply expressing an opinion in an online forum, I can decide whatever the **** I want.
I believe someone who drowns innocent children on purpose deserves to get beaten with a baseball bat.
I decided the same thing again. I guess I do get to decide.

Read Mick's post on the subject. Then at least try and make an informed decision.

Excellent points, Mick! Unfortunately, too many don't really want to see anything other than their black and white world, unless it involves them directly. Then they would have no qualms about using the same defense. Depression can take a very powrfull stranglehold on one.

Must be all that lesbian prison sex.
I swear, I saw it on a movie.
Being the cold hearted conservative I am , I wasn't one of the "Give her da chaaaair" people.
I think there was more going on there that what we realize.
I think she was just another person deceived.
I do believe she did deserve to be punished.

Hmm... why isn't she in a hospital and not a prison then? Why hasn't her doctor noticed anything? Why isn't there a lawsuit against her doctor then? Apparently those who convicted her didn't agree that she was suffering from PPD.

Because as MikeM33 said, she was officially diagnosed with something else and the insanity defense did not work. In spite of this, she is mentioned in almost every case where a mother harms her child due to postpartum issues. I think every book I have read on the subject mentions her someplace. I don't believe her doctor is actually liable for her actions, I'm just pointing out that this illness is very new to the public consciousness, and many doctors are still quite ignorant about it. Trust me on that one, you would not believe how dificult it is to find doctors and psychologists who have experience in this area.

[Puts on flame proof suit]
Hmm, an interesting discussion.
I have seen loads of cases where people are suffering very genuine mental 'illnesses' that are not recognised in terms of trial and sentencing... The person can have no knowledge, or no control of their actions, much less an 'intent to kill', yet have ended up in prison for long terms for Murder and similar offences. (In the UK, the McNaughton rules govern this area of the law, but are increasingly in adequate...)
Diagnosis of mental conditions is unfortunately an imprecise science, and also with such diverse medical opinions that abound today, defence and prosecution teams can find experts to argue whatever they want...
In the UK at least, we are seeing an ever growing number of convictions quashed, as medicine recognises new mental illnesses, or redefines old ones...
I do not know the facts of the case over and above what I have read online, so can't judge in this case, but it nonetheless brings forward a very grey area that the law would like to keep quiet...
I for one would hate to see someone sentenced to death EVER, for ANYHING, let alone when there is any doubt whatsoever about their state of mind at the time of the offence.
Also I find it some what odd to have a sentence of 'life without parole'... What hope does it give to a prisoner? and what incentive for them to behave knowing they will never ever be released?
I guess the answer to the whole thing come from what society feels prison is 'for'...
'Revenge/Retribution' or 'Rehabilitation'?
As an intelligent and 'forgiving' society, I can't how the penal system could ever be entirely centered around the former... Rehabilitation HAS to be part of the 'incarceration', if only to keep the prisoners under control...
With this in mind, I don't see why someone 'convicted' of a crime (under whatever circumstances, correctly or otherwise), who has clearly shown both remorse, and confronted what they have done, cannot have a 'penpal'...

Smith's personal life has made headlines before. Two prison guards were disciplined for having sex with Smith three years ago. One was sentenced to 90 days in jail, the other was put on probation.

Sick woman said she was saving her kids by killing them...if she does ever atone for her sins, and somehow gets to the pearly gates when she dies, would she be able to face her children?
