Since installing Panther on Thursday afternoon, I have been unable to access ANY websites at all using Safari. The icon just spins and spins and the page remains entirely blank. Oddly, MSIE 5.2 works just fine, as does Netscape.

Perhaps related is a second problem I'm encountering since upgrading to Panther... In iChat AV (installed with Panther), neither the text I've just written, nor the text I'm receiving appears in the message window. It appears as I am typing it, but as soon as I hit enter, it's gone. It is visible to the recipient though. For me, all ext messages, to and from, appear just as small thought ballons in the message window.

I am desperate for help with both issues. Any suggestions?

Did you do a clean install, or did you update the system? I've heard the update is a little buggy sometimes when you try using the newer stuff with it. Try deleting some prefs files and then restart the programs. That's my best advice without knowing more of what you've done.

I did a system update. Before starting, I repaired all disk permissions using Disk Utility. I repeated that after updating as well. I have removed the prefs for both apps without any success. Maybe my next step is to start over with a clean install. I would prefer any other solutions that might be available.

I don't have my Panther yet, but I can't afford to lose Safari. Can you say if you're using a *new* Safari that comes with Panther? or the 1.0 Safari for Jag?

Both Safari and iChat are the versions that are installed by Panther.

As a follow-up. I just tried to display a few local files (JPEGs) in Safari and even they won't display. Very odd!

I'd blame it on the upgrade. Try an Archive and Install and see if that corrects your problems.

i've got this problem too. I have installed Panther on 4 machines and 2 of them have the safari renderring problem.

All other browsers wor fine, and when viewing the source, you can see that the page is all there, it just isn't rendered in the browser.

I've done repair permissions, reset safari, even reinstall of panther, it's really got me stumped

Yeah, the Panther upgrade has messed up Safari for me, as well. It works, but only some of the time. So many webpages refuse to load. I have to refresh the page several times before it suddenly resolves the url.

Dang, it's a bit of a mystery as to why it is fine on some machines, but not on others. I'd love to know what is causing it.

Seems to be a few safar issues with this upgrade. Same, it's really great apart from that.

Can any of you guys try sample the safari when it spins?

You may need the developer tools to do this, but - in terminal - it is sample <foo> <seconds>

eg

sample Safari 5

The report will be placed in /tmp. You can read it with

more /tmp/<path> and paste here.

sounds like a font issue. I imagine Trevor is the kind of guy who installs different fonts. Impressive website , btw.

Actually on the assumption that it is font related remove all fonts in ~/Library/Fonts . You can move it to ~/Library/Fonts (Disabled)

You can do that from the Finder.

Or use the Font book.

Sammi,

Can you try sample it? You would also need to reboot after the removal of the fonts to restart the ATS server.

did you have any extra stuff installed for safari like pithhelmet before you upgraded? if so that might be the issue.

does HTML email render in Mail.app for you?

if not, the problem might be WebCore, as both Safari and Mail use it. that's my best guess.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why Safari will not load any web pages in it's browser?

I installed on Friday night and since then Safari has not worked once.

I have read all the attached comments/suggestions below and nothing seems to help.....

I love Panther but I miss Safari.

Please help.

i'm with you, it is the only thing stopping me from doing installations on all the machines in my office. Although a couple of machines seem to handle it just fine.

Let's just hope there is a patch for webcore out soon, or someone identifies an issue somewhere, i can't seem to work out where/why t might be happenning on *only some* installs.

Have you tried setting up a fresh user account to see if the problem is solely with your user account, or if it's a system wide problem? It might help narrow down the cause of the problem.

I had problems with spelling and writing text in all Cocoa Apps. The problem also occurred in a fresh user account so I knew it was a system problem.

I did an Archive and Install to re-install the system and gradually moved my old Library back into the new fresh Library until I discovered that there was a problem in /Library/Caches.

This is a slow process, because I had to boot into another partition each time I needed to change /Library. It worked though.

I posted the original message about my Safari and iChat problems. i'm pleased to say that after a re-install, using "Install and Archive," everything is back up and running perfectly. After the re-install, I started copying fonts from my previous fonts folder to the new one and discovered that one group of fonts would trigger the same Safari and iChat problems I had after my first install. By simply removing them again, all was well. Hope this helps others with similar problems. Other than that one glitch, Panther is GREAT!!!

Glad to hear you resolved your problem...I was about to say that I have had no issues doing a system update from 10.2.7...so there are obviously some compatability issues, but that is somewhat typical...

Enjoy!

Hi All, I see lots of info about Safari here, but I had a little trouble with the Panther iChat....
After update-installing Panther over 10.2.8, I found I could no longer get video sent from my iSight on a 12" powerbook in the US to another 12" powerbook and iSight in Japan. Audio was still quite clear, and both video an audio were sent from Japan without a problem, but all I was sending was a blank white screen. It seemed strange since the public beta (v106) of iChat AV had worked perfectly (once I had set up the port routing through my wireless connection correctly). Furthermore, even though the other powerbook was still running the public beta, I could get video to appear just fine on both versions of iChat AV (v106 and 145) that were running on two local macs. This made me suspect some kind of routing difficulty--but no matter how many ports I stopped or began forwarding to again, the video still didn't make it to Japan. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem or could suggest something I didn't think to try because I really want to use Panther, but until this is resolved, I've gone back to Jag and iChat public beta

I just wanted to add that I did the update because I didn't have time to do a erase and install and the update has worked flawlessly. Everything is perfect. I use a lot of basic apps, iChat, Mail (both at home wirelessly and at a university), I use safari, I connect to various windows/unix servers, printers, and everything is amazing. The only thing I safety minded thing I did is run the repair HD utility (boot from CD) and repair permissions when booted from HD. Real Player, WMP, iMovie files, QT-related files -all fine. All my passwords to websites are intact and auto-filled-in. I know it hasn't gone so smooth for everyone, but the install via update is just fine.

I don't know if this helps anyone, but I had the same problems when I did my original Archive & Install. Web pages would display fine in Camino, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera and Omni Web, but not in Safari and mail.app was damaged as well. The mail.app problem was particularly bad because I had HTML mail receipts in my archived mail that I needed to get to for serial numbers... but that's a whole other story.

I ended up biting the bullet and reinstalling Panther fresh - wiped the hard drive and reinstalled the OS. What was particularly interesting is that after Panther was loaded the very first update that was presented in Software Update was a driver for my Hard Drive. It was a different number from the one they had released for Jaguar. Funny enough, that didn't happen on the original Archive and Install I did the first time.

I will tell you - it is my FIRM opinion (after updating and installing on 3 machines and wiping 2) that it is almost imperative that you do an absolutely CLEAN INSTALL of Panther. I am not sure why but I will tell you that the machines that did not receive a COMPLETELY CLEAN INSTALL are much mor sluggish than the ones that did and one of the ones that did was a G3 iBook. In addition, both of the COMPLETELY CLEAN INSTALLS received HD updates - but none of the Archive and Installs did.

Think there is anything to this? I would be interested to know.
In the end, its all about the composition.

i was hoping that it wouldn't come to his, but i spose it's always a good thing isn't it.

I will attempt a CLEAN CLEAN install and see how i go. Apps are just such a prick to reinstate, oh well.

thanks dude.

I finally have Safari back!!!

I removed the fonts folder from my home/library/fonts and placed it on my desktop. I restarted my my computer and Safari finally sprung to life.

A new empty fonts folder has been automatically created in the home/library destination.......I will now individually put each of my fonts back untill Safrai stops working again. Extremely laborious but hey! at least I know what the problem is now.

hope this helps anyone else having the same issue.

cheers

I got the same problem after doing an upgrade. Tried the fonts thing, tried removing all internet plugins, itunes plugins, quicktime plugins, etc... nothing helped. Reinstalled with archive & install (saving users), it worked... but after I reinstalled some apps, it started acting up again.. I tried turning things off, removing all the aforementioned library items, but nothing helped. I'd rather not install AGAIN. Apple's gonna have to do something about this

Or you could do this:

Put half of the fonts back in the fonts folder.

If you get a problem, then you know it is one of those fonts that is causing it. If not, then take all the fonts out of the folder and put the other half of the fonts in it.

Whichever half of the fonts that was causing the problems should be halved again, and again, and again... until you find out which one is causing the problem.

This process works quite well when there is only one font that is causing the problem, but it'll still work when there are several problem fonts. You may want to put good fonts in a temporary "safe fonts" folder and problem fonts in a "problem fonts folder". It should save some time.

Just an FYI on accounts

I set up a new account and Safari works fine there, but not on the main/admin which pre-existed.

I did an archive and install yesterday, and everything is fine for the most part, except Safari is driving me nuts. I randomly cannot click on links, or if I'm scrolling with the wheel it will suddenly stop, and I click around a few times then I can scroll again. And if I'm in another app it sometimes takes two clicks on the Safari window to bring it up.

I have had this happen to me on two machines. A 1.25 Ghz G4 and a 17in Powerbook.

With the 1.25Ghz I resorted to wiping the disk and doing a complete re-install of everything, which fixed the issue.

On the Powerbook, I did not have that luxury. I am in the process of running SU to get to 10.3.2 (with a different user, because SU wouldn't work either with the account that Safari had died on). We'll see if it works after that.

If not, I guess the decided upon fix is to remove fonts from the /Users/name/Library directory.

For those that have tried this and reinstalled fonts back in, can you name the fonts that seem to be causing the problem?

EDIT:

Well, SU did not solve anything. And moreover, there were already no fonts in the User's Library folder. I'm stuck.

I did notice also that SU for this user does not show any description of the update you have clicked on. Obviously a related problem with displaying HTML.

Can anybody help?

Aha, more seemingly related stuff... iChat wouldn't show any reply messages. I could send other messages and see what I typed, but their messages to me never showed. What the ... is going on?!
