Wireless will be slow as hell for things like music and other large files.
If you have a home router, plug both computers in directly with ethernet (CAT-5) cables. If you're running Windows XP, it's pretty easy to share an entire drive. You can then map to that in OS X on your MacBook and copy files over. Check out this tutorial for some information on how to share files between Windows XP and OS X. I just Googled "share files between Windows XP and OS X", and got a ton of results. I'm sure you can find what you need somwhere in there.
If you can afford to get a USB external hard drive, I'd recommend it (this is assuming your old computer has USB 2.0). They're very useful for data backup and sharing files with other people, etc. You can use that to transfer your stuff - that's probably the fastest - and easiest - route for you.
Hope that helps!

a flash drive for your word files would work well
but for your music (assuming you have a large library), an external HD or DVD/CD will do
If you have firewire on your PC, you could put your new mac into firewire target disk mode and copy that way

Has anyone successfully done that? I've heard that it's pretty difficult to get a mac in firewire disk mode to show up on a Windows machine.
Not only that, but you'd have to either pay for MacDrive or create a FAT32 partition on the MacBook in order to copy files over...
