It's likely you have some interference. Any new appliances (microwave oven for example?) or new neighbors with their own wifi networks?

What channel is your AirPort set up on? Or is it set to automatic? If it's set to automatic you can try rebooting it and see if it choses a new channel to circumvent the interference.

To get an idea of how congested wifi bands are in your area and to find a good channel to switch to you can try using a tool like iStumbler.

firmware updated to no avail.
new appliances? no. But when did recently get a player piano that has a wifi network. but the sudden range decrease doesnt coincide with the arrival of the new piano. As for neighbors having anything to do with it, i am surrounded by fields. Im trying istumbler now.

friends macbook shows no problems with the network, so the flaw is within this computer, not the network

Create a new user on your computer and log in as that user. See if the range problem persists under that user.

Run Apple Hardware Test. See if it reports any errors.

Boot off an alternative OS X installation (for example the install DVD) and see if the network issues persist.
