How often are refurbished MacBook Pros put up at the Apple online store? I know that they are often gone hours after they are placed for sale, so I want to know if there is any kind of rhythm for sales. I'm looking to get the 2.0 Core Duo refurb for $1349 and am wondering if you guys have any comments about it. I don't have a link for the specs but I think it has a 80GB HDD and 512MB RAM (will be upgraded later). Thanks.

Check on Saturday mornings about 8AM EST. Otherwise, check every morning about 7-8AM EASTERN.

Thanks. Do you know of any places with good reviews over the MacBook Pro?

The original Ars Technica review was interesting, if slightly (IMO) overenthusiastic.

If you're going with a refurb. MBP and have the extra $250-300, the 2.16 C2D model has quite a few advantages. In addition to better specs (120GB HD, 1GB RAM, DVD+R DL, FW800), the newer generation runs somewhat cooler and is free of many of the annoyances facing the 1st gen. machines (processor whine for instance).

My dad isn't one of those types to spend $1700 on a notebook, especially when my $1250 dv4000 broke down (reason why I'm getting a new one).

$1460 is pushing it, and that's even if I throw in some cash, but I'm not really concerned about the CPU too much. I just want a Mac with a decent video card, and the MacBook Pro fits the bill quite nicely.

If price is the ultimate constraint, have a look at the refurb. 1.83GHZ MBPs, which, AFAIX, start at $1250 (possibly $1300). Spend the extra $$ saved on a RAM upgrade, which you'll probably need, either way.

I ordered mine last Tuesday and it shipped the next day (the 11th). It's Fedex Ground though from CA to NJ so it's taking a long time to get here. I would give them a call.

Just checked my bank page and $2k+ is pending from Apple. Called Cust Svc and Ruth said the same thing as order status - ship 20-24 APR. Crossing my fingers it ships today w/ 2nd day. She said she couldn't change the shipping to next day because it was being prepped already so she nixed the shipping charge.

Call them again iamwiz, they always tell me what they can and are as helpful as they can be... something I just thought of - check with your bank and make sure there are no snags from that end - fraud dept flagged my account this morning and I had to straighten that out for the order to go thru.

Z

Just checked Order Status for the 50th time today and I have a tracking number with estimated delivery Thursday the 19th.

The charge is already on my CC and so far everyone that we have talked to has been less than nice to us. They said that 5 days is the normal ship period.

Unfortunately, my dad was a little slow in letting me purchase the MacBook Pro. Going to discuss it tonight. Too bad they are all gone (2.0 Ghz CD) so I'll be playing the waiting game again I guess. When do you think they are likely to restock again? Fri/Sat? How many to they end up making available at a time anyway?

Mike,

What was the price of that refurb? I missed these on the site this morning, and they are no longer shown.

* 1440 x 900 pixels
* 1GB memory
* 120GB hard drive1
* 6x double-layer SuperDrive
* ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics with 128MB SDRAM

Did any of those 2.16 GHz C2D MBPs come with more RAM or HD capacity than what was listed on the refurb page?

Dunno what's going to show up tomorrow, but what I ordered was:
C2D 2.33 GHz w/2GB RAM (15" matte screen)
120GB 5400rpm HDD
256MB X1600
1999 --> shipped 2056

The HDD will soon be swapped out for a 7200rpm, either 160GB or the new 200GB

Just a quick heads up... if anyone's worried about memory I ordered a 1gb stick for my MBP for $63 at Crucial.com. Can't beat that! Apple charges much more.

Should I buy a refurbished MacBook Pro from Amazon? Can I still buy AppleCare? When would my warranty start?

Here's what I'm looking at: Amazon.com: Apple MacBook Pro MA600LL/A 15.4" Notebook PC (2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, SuperDrive): Computers & PC Hardware

If the machine is 'factory refurbished', it'll include Apple's standard 1 year warranty, and you can buy AppleCare to extend it to 30 years. Warranty starts theoretically from date of purchase. If it's reseller refurbished, then you should be able to get AppleCare, but the initial 1 year factory warranty may have already begun. I'd check with the reseller to confirm.

Difference between Apple's refurb. and the machine you found is ~$70, assuming no tax from Amazon.

57 dollars tax, no shipping charge - Apple dropped it yesterday

Like my location shows - NEAR Boulder, in Weld county, one of the poorest counties in the state with commensurately lower tax rates.

dagamer - Didn't pay attention that you're in Austin - yes I paid tax on the MBP but not much. Boulder county has a ridiculous tax-rate but I live a county over that has a much lower rate. And - Apple dropped the shipping charge, not the MBP.

BTW, you're not a Tea-sipper are you? (My folks are, but I'm an Aggie - TAMU for one year and CSU for 4+)

Interesting to note that I just noticed that the $1399 Mac says 5-7 days to ship, where all the rest say 3-5. Shucks...

I went ahead and ordered a C2D MacBook Pro, but they had a problem with my credit cards for some reason (one my parents, the other is mine). I have to call them up to get it sorted out, but other than that I'm pretty happy right now.

Does it really take 3-5 days to ship? I opted for the 2-day shipping because I need the laptop within the next 2 weeks or so. Where do they store the refurbished laptops, do you know?

dagamer - just went over to FedEx's depot in Boulder and picked my baby up. No retail packaging, very generic, but all the accessories and a Freakin' Beautiful 15" MBP, cosmetically perfect, no warped lid like my first one, last year. It's still running software updates - 337MB total on a slow-@ssed network at work.

First thing after the updates, load Fan Control 1.1 or you get a bonus nut-warmer.
About the ship time - I ordered this thing Tuesday morning and I have it now - two days YMMV

Wow, when did it ship? And did you get it expedited to you? I chose the 2 day shipping because I need to have a laptop before finals for studying. And congrats on your new lappy!

Now the only thing I wish I could get is the box... maybe I'll go check eBay.

Just talked to an honest CSR at Apple who said that they don't even have any of the $1399 MBPs, but they are still selling them. He said that there is no way of knowing when more will come in, either. They creditted me the overnight shipping back, but I am going to cancel the order, this is ridiculous. I got rid of my last Mac because of atrocious customer service and the local Apple Store, and this just sealed the deal with me never buying another one again.

@iamwiz82 - sorry to hear about your bad experience with Apple CSRs - I've been an Apple whore for over a decade and all my dealings have been top-notch. Hate to think how much money I've spent with them, but it'll never match the profit I made on a thousand shares of their stock - it bought my house for me..

I also ordered a refurb MBP C2D last Friday, and it arrived today. This is my first Mac, and I am so excited! I had been frustrated with Windows for a few years now and this is just what I was waiting for. Well, aside from Leopard, but thats OK.

Hopefully you wont have my experience with refurbs:

Since March 27, 2007, I have sent 3 (each) MacBook Pros 2.33 MHz back to Apple. The first 2 where refurbs. They arrived in perfect physical condition. But both arrived DOA. These were refurbs that are put through Apples stringent refurb process....right. The latest one was sent back yesterday; it was a Brand new MacBook Pro, that arrived with a warped screen. The 4th one should be arriving tomorrow. This is the last chance for Apple. They have given me, to date, an ipod shuffle and $100 refund for compensation. But I think if this next one has issues, something is telling me not to switch to Apple.

Back in June, I bought a refurb 1.83 MBP... just sold it this past week to upgrade to a C2D 2.16 MBP (Refurb). Woke up at 6am, ordered it bleary with fatigue [I'm not usually up at 6am] and it shipped out later that day.

According to FedEx, it should get to my lab on monday. I can live with that.

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

How good are the Apple refurbished? Many of my friends are planning to get MB/MBP's for the next school year.. Most of them will prefer to get a refurb becuase they are cheaper, but they question the refubs quality.

It's hit or miss with the Apple refurbs. However, new machines aren't exempt from defects either. There's no hard data as to problem rates with refurbs vs. new boxes, so it's hard to say more.

For the record, I'm really happy with my MBP C2D 2.16 refurb, Rock solid, no defects, not even cosmetic ones.
