This is an older iBook, say 2001 or so. It runs fine and screen is fine until you put too much pressure where your right wrist rests. Then it starts the pixelation and blurring and lines start appearing until you keep trying to press it then the screen will go pink with lines all in. I am thinking that one of the ribbon cables is bad. What do y'all think?

This is a white "iceBook" G3 you're talking about, right? That entire line had serious GPU problems.

Yes, I believe it is the "icebook" What do you mean GPU problems? I was aware of some screen issues but not normally this. What do you know?

Widespread GPU failures throughout the whole line, mostly attributed to poor soldering and case flexing:

iBook G3 and G4 logic board problems technical aspect | Applefritter

All of the iceBook G3s seemed destined to eventually fail. Really quite shameful on Apple's part.

see this thread (quite long)

http://forums.macnn.com/69/mac-noteb...b-logic-board/

some people put a folder paper shim inside the case in the correct spot to put pressure on the video chip! ha! very high tech!

I'm about to try reflowing the solder with a heatgun on a G3 ibook...we'll see how that goes!

Stop putting too much pressure where your right wrist rests. (try saying that 3 times!)

A friend of mine kept his going for a long time after similar symptoms by using a "C" clamp on it.
He eventually tried to use the shim technique, but that didn't work for him.

So, is it worth it to try and buy a new logic board? If it is what would I need to look for that would work in my ibook?

On a computer that old, it's not worth paying the price for a new logic board, especially when it's destined for the same failure.

You may be able to find a complete replacement of the same (or newer) model for not much money that you could transfer your airport card and ram into.
That would be much quicker and easier that replacing the logic board.

That's true. I could find a newer unit. I could just replicate the Hard drive to the new one. What models will my ram and airport card go into without any issues? I know the same model, but is there a newer model G4 or G5 perhaps that the swap would just be simple?

The airport card and ram is different for g3 ibooks vs g4 ibooks.

And for reference, there aren't any G5 notebooks, they all would have melted after a few minutes use.

That's a breezeblock...

Anyway, you can either transfer the internals (minus logic board) to another iBook G3, or upgrade to an iBook G4 or MacBook.
