Safari 3 now no longer passes the ACID2 test. Try for yourself:

The Second Acid Test

Neither does Firefox by the way. Ironically, IE 8 can now render it correctly:

I believe this was due to a server config error since Safari 3 did pass the ACID2 test and its not a test that chagnes. Some people did some digging and found that the server config has an error in it that is probably screwing things up.

The Second Acid Test

Works fine in Safari 3, for the record.

The test in the OP doesn't work properly for me, but the second looks as intended. I'm using Safari 3.0.4 on OS X 10.5.1

so maybe the IE team was linking to a fake acid2 test, one that rendered correctly in IE8 but wasn't the real test, hahaha!

Yeah, strange. The first one doesn't render correctly on my system whereas the second one does. In any case, that's good news that MS finally supports CSS in a useful manner (I guess the position:fixed option works properly with IE8 …).
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Camino throws out a yellow blob with red and black. Safari shows it just fine. Weird.

Works again in Safari. The test has been fixed apparently.

Firefox 2.0.0.11 and Camino fail though. In Firefox 3.0.b2 it works correctly.

I believe the security update 1.1 fixed what 1.0 broke.

Maybe it was just a screenshot of Safari and then they used MS Paint to put in the IE tab

I'm really happy that they are finally supporting web standards, but, I have one issue with the IE8 team's blog post.

As a team, we’ve spent the last year heads down working hard on IE8. Last week, we achieved an important milestone that should interest web developers. IE8 now renders the “Acid2 Face” correctly in IE8 standards mode.

Emphasis is mine
". . . in IE8 standards mode."
Does this mean that Internet Explorer 8 will have different modes that it will render pages in?
Throughout the blog post they talk about how important it is to keep backwards compatibility and not break all the existing webpages.

To me that means:
We know that originally we messed up Internet Explorer's rendering. Unfortunately there are a lot of web developers who have created websites that won't render correctly if we fix Internet Explorer's rending.
To make everyone happy we have created different Internet Explorer Modes™. By default Internet Explorer 8 will render in "Backwards Compatibility Mode™" but if someone would like to, they can choose "IE8 Standards Mode™" which will render pages 'properly' and also pass the ACID2 Test.
Dead God, I hope I'm wrong.

Every browser has at least two modes to render pages in, usually called "quirks mode" and "strict mode". Quirks mode is there to render the billions of non-standards-compliant web pages out there on the web.

I did not know that. Thanks because it puts my mind at ease.
I really do hope IE8 turns out well.

That IE8 renders Acid 2 correctly in standards mode truly is a step forward. Thank goodness.
