Just ordered a apple tv. To take advantage of 802.11n on the apple tv for streaming video from my 24 inch iMac, I need to enable it. How? From what I can find out, you need an airport base station to do this. Or am I wrong?
My reference is this Apple - 802.11

Yes, you need an Airport Extreme (the square one, not the round one) base station for 802.11n or another brand of 802.11n access point (many are cheaper). If you don't buy the Airport Extreme, you'll also need to spend the $2 on the enabler.

Which only works for Core 2 Duo Macs. There are Core Duo 24" iMacs out there too...

bearcatrp, which iMac do you have? It makes a difference.

I have a 24 inch iMac (1st gen) which has the core2duo. From what I have read, it should work.

Cool. Earlier, CD iMacs don't have the N-capable AirPort card and wouldn't be able to use the enabler.

Just updated it. Not a problem. Seems faster connecting on my 11g network. Just have to wait until my apple tv arrives monday and see how the streaming is.

If you have one device on your network that is not N your network will drop from N speed to G. You will not get the benefit of upgrading the router. You would be better off getting a USB N adapter for the iMac or if you know how, upgrade the internal airport card.

This part will work in a Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and the iMac.

Read here:

A reader's guide to upgrading a Core Duo Macbook Pro using a $49 Mac Pro Airport Extreme card (802.11n compatible Mini PCI-e card). Apple's 802.11n Enabler is installed using Pacifist. The MacBook, Intel-based Mac Mini and iMac also use Mini PCI-e Wireless cards so this swap should work with them also.

Since upgrading to N on the iMac, even though my router is G, I still see an increase in performance. Not N speed but better than before. I plan on getting another router with 802.11N soon but not hooking it up to the net, just for the streaming. The iMac streams pretty fast with the G router now, no studders. Thanks for the reply.
