Very nice.

You can now listen to Internet radio stations.

And the cool thing is that music will continue to play (Internet or iTunes) while you use the menu system. I just downloaded the free preview of Law & Order and the music never stopped.

I like the new menu system.

Now off to explore.

The update isn't firmware so I changed it to software in the title.

Thanks! I hate to post inaccurate information.

BTW, I found out about the update on the MacNN homepage:

Apple TV 3.0 update becomes official

Quickly validating rumors, Apple has officially released v3.0 firmware for the Apple TV. The core change is a new menu system, designed to make it simpler to flip between major categories; it also draws focus to particular information, such as which videos have been rented or are unwatched. New is an "Internet" category, which folds in YouTube while adding support for Internet radio streaming. Favourite stations can be tagged.

Yes.

All I'm suggesting is that MacNN needs to update the article to reflect Apple's terminology.

Downloaded last night. I usually wait as I've been burned in the past with ATV software updates. (Audio suddenly not working on movies that worked in the past).

Nothing earth shattering in the update....not sure it deserves the 3.0 moniker but so far so good.

Does anyone know if ATV3 is based on Snow Leopard? Has it gone 64 bit with Grand Central?

I'd like to apply the ATV 3.0 update, but I don't want to hose Boxee/XBMC (specifically their ability to playback AVI and WMV files). Is it possible to install something like Perian or Flip4Mac following the update? Would that work? Would I have to bring my AVI and WMV files into iTunes before syncing them to AppleTV?

You need to "patchstick" your ATV after applying the update. Nothing will be retained. Be prepared to start from scratch.

That's why I'm not upgrading.

That makes two of us. I've read reports of 3.0 and none of the features are compelling -- certainly not worth hosing my patchsticked ATV setup and spending time on setting it up from scratch.

Three of us. ATV 3.0 looks more Sony than Apple.

Regardless, I really like it. It is so much more responsive, and I really appreciate how it puts my media at the top of each menu, like it should be.

Yeah, I'd rather not go that route and risk it not installing properly. But couldn't I just SFTP some plugins like Perian or Flip4Mac, then move my AVI files into iTunes and from there sync to AppleTV?

After updating to 3.0 and then 3.0.1, I now get a grey screen noises pattern over the boot image. This disappears once the boot sequence is finished. It's like a checkerboard of the type of image you'd see if your cable went out and it rotates or is animated. Has anyone else seen this? Although I don't reboot often, this is annoying.

There are some relatively new updates out that get patchstick and 3.0/3.0.1 back in sync.

I just used atvusb-creator 1.0.b10 with the dmg referenced here.

This gave me back ssh and Software Menu. Unfortunately none of the options were responsive, so I ssh'd into the ATV and ran
wget http://iscripts.googlecode.com/files...Menu-1.0b1.run
sudo sh SoftwareMenu-1.0b1.run
sudo reboot

That gave me a functioning Software Menu.

Now for Perian - Install Perian - AwkwardTV

And then ATVFiles
wget http://ericiii.net/sa/appletv/ATVFiles-1.3.0b1.run
sudo sh ATVFiles-1.3.0b1.run

Restart Finder from Software Menu.

That's how I like to use my ATV -- just the basics of Perian with media copied to it from my LAN, accessible via the (ATV)Files > Movies menu option.
