It was his "parting gift" to the fans:

David Bowie's final record was a carefully-orchestrated farewell to his fans, his producer has confirmed.

Lazarus, released on the Bowie's 69th birthday just two days before his death, opens with the lyrics: "Look up here, I'm in Heaven!"

So far a rough year for musicians. RIP Ziggy.

He went out with style, which is what you'd expect from him. Watching the lazarus video is a bit spooky/surreal now though... but also just knowing he planned it that way, then also makes me smile.
