I have a question:
I want to buy a Powerbook with a French keyboard but I am living in the US. I know that one can order such a Powerbook from Canada, but I also need to have the laptop 'build to order' - in that it would have higher end components.
Does anyone know the best way to go about buying this? It's tough because Canadian Powerbooks are quite a bit more expensive and they might not directly ship it to me as it is.
Shouldn't there be an easier way to buy this if I'm in the US and merely study french extensively / require the appropriate keyboard?
thanks -

unfortunately it might just be that hard. could you order the powerbook using the normal US store and then have an authorized service center order and install a french keyboard? cost might be an issue but you could probably unload your powerbook keyboard (US) when you're done so you might just be out the labor to put it in.

That's a good idea, I didn't ever think about custom ordering for a keyboard replacement. I'll have to search around looking for a dealer that would preform such a 'transplant'.
thanks for the tip

Um, you don't need a French keyboard to type the french accent marks. It's very easy to type accent marks on a US Keyboard on a Macintosh. No need to remember ALT+4 digit code... You can even change the layout to a French one if you're willing to remember which keys type which characters.
I remember when I was in Germany and needed to use the computers there. I was always exchanging the "Y" and the "Z" characters because the top row in Germany goes like this: "QWERTZUIOP." So people would get e-mails that said stuff like "Hez, everzbodz, I'm tzping this e-mail in Germanz! Oops! Damn German kezboard"

The price differential isn't that much - the Canadian dollar is worth about 80 cents U.S. . Most of the Powerbook prices between the two countries are less than 50 dollars difference after the exchange rate is factored in . I would doubt that you could order from the Canadian Apple store ( As a Canadian I can't order from the American apple store ) . A short list of some of the many Canadian resellers of Apple are (1) www.compusmart.com (2) www.cdw.ca (3) www.cpused.com . I have never bought products from these stores but they have each been in business a long time .I would think these stores have or could get the higher end products if needed . Two things to check for are (1) duties- we have a free trade agreement between the two countries but you should double check anyway and (2) most states and provinces have tax rebates when products are purchased for out of state or province use .
