Well, its really neither here nor there, the CURRENT versions of Apple apps shouldn't have a watch coded in them for any reason, not even as remaining OS 9 code. In OS 9, it didn't need to be coded in (I fell like I said that 40 times now)

It was in the Toolbox. The Toolbox has been updated and is now the Carbon frameworks in OS X. So, it is obviously still there.

Shouldn't isn't the same as isn't. I just saw it in Safari. Not a pluggin, the real deal. There's some OLD code in there perhaps?

I don't know - all I know, is it's there. Just out of interest, when was the watch nixed? Was it ever recommended in OSX?

From Carbon, that's where. There's really no such thing as a pure Carbon or pure Cocoa app. There are several frameworks that are Carbon that Cocoa apps can utilize and vice versa.

No, it says in the link I gave a while back, that it is an OS 9 icon and not advised in OS X.

Right, that's what it says right now, but did it allways say that , from the first version of OSX? I mean, there have been revisions of the HIGs for OSX, right?

Just because it's advised not to use it, doesn't mean that it's still not there in Carbon code. If you think about it, it needs to be there. If an old piece of code is designed to use it and it's not there, the code breaks. There are a lot of things around for compatibility.

I'm surprised no one else has chimed in and said it, but Apple is one of the biggest violators of their own HIG.

I know that Apple doesn't care about their HIG, but a watch cursor? That they say nay to? That would have to be added into OS X programs like Safari...

Your Carbon Code theory doesn't work because Safari.... sigh...

I give up. It makes no sense.

According to Art, Carbon code, but in OS X apps like Safari that never touched OS9, there should be no OS 9 cursor.

Ask Apple. There is no good reason for it and I have never personally seen it.

I just told you there is no such thing as a pure Cocoa app. IIRC, menus and the menubar are Carbon code. So, Safari, which is a Cocoa app, still interfaces with Carbon code. Therefore, it's not unimaginable that some Carbon fragment is calling the watch cursor.

Has anybody besides peeb seen the watch cursor in Safari? On all the computers I've used, it's never once come up.

Why are you running adobe reader pluggin on Safari? What does that give you that Safari' regular pdf handling doesn't?

Probably just my ignorance of something, I'd test it now, but I don't want to install and uninstall Adobe again. I'm getting a new Macbook tomorrow, when I get it, I'll test out Safari and let you know.

All you have to do is move the plug-in out of the plug-ins folder.

I believe that's provided by Gecko. I've never seen it except in Gecko-based browsers.

We're not talking about the those. We're talking about the standard arrow cursor with the tiny b&w spinning wheel (like the BMW logo, except b&w and spinning). I've only seen it in Gecko-based browsers.

This is it.

It's in ./Contents/MacOS/res/cursors/ in Firefox's package.

Sure - I should have made it clear that I wasn't responding to that specific point - just posting another variant I just noticed.

You mean the spinning quarter circle next to "Posting Quick Reply"? That one is part of the forum software. It's not an OS progress indicator. It's just an animated gif.

No, Peeb, that is not a cursor. It's in the forum page.

And you MUST have a plug-in in Safari. I know the watch would not be showing its face so frequently.

I really don't have any pluggins, but I'll go ahead and delete then re-install, just to be sure.

Just tried to take screen snapshots of it - the cursor doesn't show up.

N.B. These are for all browsers, not just Safari.

P.S. The one "plug-in" that everyone is forgetting about and is used pretty much system wide, is Quicktime. I don't know if it could be a cause of the watch cursor in unexpected places, but it really wouldn't surprise me if it was.

Yeah, well Firefox isn't an Apple product. They may have hard-coded that cursor in. I've seen it in Camino, too.

Does no one bother to pay attention or read the other posts in this thread? Too many things have had to be repeated.

I pointed out in this post, which is only 11 posts above this one, that it's a Firefox cursor. I even said exactly where the files are located.

Wow. Then I have a boat-load of pluggins. Is there any easy way to load Safari without them, without messing them all up?

Why don't you just move them all to the desktop temporarily, try Safari, and when you're done, move them back?
