As a nod to realism, the “dingy bar” location we shot in yesterday let us use their horde of cockroaches for no extra charge.

Those are Chicago cockroaches. More likely that SAG was on-site to assure none of the cast were inadvertently eaten.

When I was told, that’s what I assumed. The ones I have in my apartment are Jurassic mother****ers.
These were the tiny kind, though. We were worried the diva types might complain, but no one seemed to mind... except, ironically, the wife of one of the actors.
The biggest issue, other than some no doubt going on vacation in my camera bags, is we had to keep all the snacks sealed, and our drinks sitting on stools.

This is in Chicago hipster central. Before you know it, they’d have a topknot to go with the beard.

I didn’t have a chance to get much for the cockroach shoot, which wasn’t too bad since we kept everything sealed up anyway.
However, for the next shoot with her, I raided Whole Foods, and got 15 different bags of GFV snacks. She was thrilled.
Thanks!

Small scale printout of a newspaper page getting screen time.
Might get a little political.

It’s 99% Latin Ipsum, but then romanizes the Cyrillic. The other one percent is (no doubt horribly) machine translated.
All the images are a full size halftone bitmap, so shrinking murders them.

Well, I ultimately just feel stupid and embarrassed about the whole thing. I’ve done this long enough to know the rule is carry the process through to the end while testing.
If I had done that, I would have caught the clogged nozzle. I would have likewise caught the margins being too narrow, and the whole thing being cartoonishly large. At least I could fix the last one by printing at 85% size.
Two more newspapers to go for the project. It shouldn’t be hard to do better.

Yet another paper. Got the black to work at least. I’ve got the flu, which made the whole experience miserable.

You probably missed that clogged nozzle because you were coming down with the flu. Yes, that can be a thing. Before you notice that the large truck has slammed into you, your body is already fighting the bug as hard as it can, and that makes a person fuzzy-headed and prone to mistakes.
Last year I had not one but TWO flu patients who had fallen and broken themselves badly before their flu symptoms had fully arrived.

I wish I could blame that, but I wasn’t exposed to the most likely vector (actor with the flu) until the day after, and I knew weeks earlier I was being somewhat delinquent in running tests through to the end of the process.
This one was all me.

They are sketched out, improvised, or placed in scenes by the fate of logic, existing to serve the performances or action around them. But while iconic movie props make us laugh, gasp, scream, and/or sit in absolute silence, they rarely start iconic; as a property master will tell you, the best on-screen objects go unnoticed, silently winning you over with truth.

Got all the printer problems sorted, so I’m trying to hammer these out as fast as possible. They’re “stuffer pages”, which have very little chance of being seen. Gotta make 6 more of these pairs.

As is, I can make a single, two-sided spread in about a day’s worth of work. That’s with digital, and it being 98% fake.
I can’t even imagine this 7 x 22” column shit being done for reals.
Every day.

If you ever saw one in action, you'd immediately see it as the late-industrial-age child that it is. All whirring gears and intricate clattering mechanicals, with a pot of molten lead alloy hanging off the side. They're pretty cool. And hot, smelly, and noisy in that "happy machine at work" kind of way.

In the 80s there was a giant machine that would print galleys. Then poor schmoes had to paste them together into mechanicals, on boards, with wax.
The digital revolution could not come soon enough. Thank you Aldus.

Going to keep working on it, but I’m pretty sure I have to cancel the shoot on Tuesday this is for, in case I have more than a cold.
Extra irritated because this is the same shoot which got canceled a few weeks ago when I got sick.

Shoot was canceled, and I lost the thread of making these for a bit. It’s been rescheduled for Monday, so it’s still needed, and would get used for other stuff anyway.
This is the last “stuffer sheet”. Now I’ve got 7 different sheets to use as filler.
Not completely done yet. I have the front page for this issue, it’s the one where the police and bureau get criticized, but I still need to whip up the reverse side. I’ll use my original test page as one-half.
I’d also like to tweak the front page a bit. It got finished so close to the original deadline, it wasn’t 100% baked. At the least, it should have captions for the photos.
Edit: ideally I can improve on all of these. I only cared about the edges looking more or less right. These should have photos, sub-stories, and about three times as many ads. I didn’t scrape anywhere near enough a few months ago. Buuuut... I can do that a little bit here and there. They’re good enough for the near future.
