One of my three internal drives on my MacPro went awol. The system drive and one of my two media drives shows up... the other media drive is gone. Thought maybe it got moved by accident into a folder somewhere but a search shows nothing. The volume doesn't show up anywhere. Its not in the finder, Disk Utility or system profiler.

A search on this brings up things to do in the terminal. Don't even know what that is... and not sure I want to go there. Do I...?

Help.

Move the drive in question to a different bay, then check for it in Disk Utility and Apple System Profiler. If neither can see the drive, then the drive is dead.

Well that was an interesting experiment. I have my System drive in bay 1, ProTools drive bay 2. Media drive bay 3 (keep in mind Media drive is the one that was missing).

I pulled out bay #2 first (ProTools drive)... and restart. System drive and Media drive show up on desktop... huh? I pull out Media drive on #3 and put ProTools drive in bay #3... shows up. Confirms ALL drives are working. I stick everything back in the way they were originally... and they work. Go figure. Needed to be reseated? Whacky that the one that was missing shows up by pulling out the one that was showing...???

I even put in the startup disk and repaired all disc's. Disc Utility said they all appear to be okay.

Anyway... thanks for the suggestion that got things moving in the right direction.

I've had the missing hard drive icon a couple times again since I first posted this. I pulled out and reseated the drive and it would show up again, only to disappear a couple days later.

I finally pulled it out altogether and moved the other (3rd drive) to its 2nd bay next to the startup drive. I did notice the one I pulled (the disappearing one) is a Seagate and the other two are WD drives. I also noticed no more clickety clack on startup. I guess the Seagate is on its way out.

Going to order another WD and hopefully coax one more startup out of this Seagate and back it up.
