In truth, I think that would be pointless. It's only a 6% difference.

*bump*

Any word on whether Giga has received the 1.6Ghz chips? Still very interested in seeing how fast they can reliably run these as a dual CPU upgrade for my QuickSilver dual 1Ghz.

To dislike Sinatra is a sign of highly questionable taste. To dislike the Beatles is a serious character flaw.

Anybody know the differences between the 7457 and 7455A architectures?

It's a simple die shrink. Only difference is the large L2 (512KB instead of 256KB) and one extra L3 cache adressing pin (doubling the possible L3 cache size).

ok, apparently they have now determined that there is no significant advantage of the 1.6Ghz chips for them to offer them, and will only sell the dual 1.4Ghz chips rated at 1.8Ghz. They will have some in towards the end of the week, and there is a 24 hour lead time from receipt of the chips to shipping. so, I'll end up saving 100 bucks (which I've now spent half of) and will have my upgrade within a week if all goes well.

that's the story.

Well... Crap. No 1.93 for me...

Time for a situational reevaluation. For what I would spend on a processor upgrade, plus what I could get on eBay for selling my G4, I could buy a new Dual 1.8GHz G5.

Decicions, decisions...

well, the 1.4s may be able to be clocked that high, we just really don't know at this point. I'll surely try it though.

but, I'm not holding my breath. I'll settle for 1.86Ghz though, which has already been done (I've checked out XBench scores ) so 1.93 doesn't seem that far fetched, although I still am not quite sure if it'll happen. I will definitely try though.

Link? Checked myself and can't find it.

Do you intend to throw some Arctic Silver on there once you get thee upgrade? Giga advises against it, which has kept me from doing it with either of the Giga upgrades I've owned. But I figure the main thing holding back the 7447A at high clocks will be heat, not voltage, so I'm more open to dismisssing Giga's frown on thermal compoun application.

Oh, and BTW: Giga has removed the Dual 1.6/1.73 upgrade from their product offering page.

I guess this means we'll never see it.

we'll see. that **** is expensive

I will play with it first and see what I can do, then I'll replace the fan with a Vantec tornado probably, and then I may try some arctic silver. you can put the fan back on... you can't really redo their compound (or can you...)

I definitely want a run at 2Ghz though, but I'd love to keep that warranty in tact.

http://ladd.dyndns.org/xbench/merge.xhtml?doc2=98705 there is the XBench score. I beat it on all tests that aren't CPU dependent

Any chance of the new Freescale chips in a compatible processor card? AFter some of the things Sonnet has pulled off (like the G3 upgrade for the 7200... now THAT was a godlike hack) I can't see them running unto a problem with the new e600 chips.

How about a dual dual-core upgrade?

Well, finally placed my order for a Dual 1.8GHz. Went with MacGurus as they have them for the lowest price ($683) and they're expecting a shipment this week. Went ahead and got FedEx 2-Day on it for $15 too.

Oh goodie...

Can't wait for the next revision, the extra cache should benchmark a lot higher, the prices for the 1.7 will drop, and I'll join the upgrade club ;-)

Can anyone check to see the model of fans that the gigadesigns, or any upgrade for that matter, is using? I'm doing a couple G4 fan changes, so knowing the model to find the dBa/CFM would be a great help in planning. My G4 is too loud as it is, adding two CPU fans and a hotter PSU would be bad without some extra planning. The only site to mention it was xlr8yourmac.com, saying that a label was covering the fan label in one model.

My dual 1.33 gigadesigns upgrade uses a single 80mm fan, and the name of the fan was a 'max flow company' fan. I googled it, and the piece of **** pushes 41 cfm!!!!!! It's noisy as all hell too, I think the bearing is going out, but I can't find another fan that puts out nearly that much air. I think I might just get one that pushes 35cfm or something....

boy can I help you

www.vantecusa.com

get a Tornado the bitch will push more air than you ever dreamed of. I may be getting one myself to help with the overclocking of the dual 1418.

84.1 cfm of air
55.2 dba

it's loud, but it pushes 2x the air the stock fan pushes

Well yeah, I found a few that can push 80 cfm but I don't want a super loud ass fan, that's the whole reason I ahve to replace it: It's loud.

Haha... 55.2 dba. I think I'd rather not have a computer at all.

Anyways, been harassing Laurie from MacGurus. Apparently, the upgrade will ship from the same warehouse that Giga ships direct-orders from. And shes telling me that they're hoping a batch will ship on Friday, mine included.

So if my order is shipping from the same place your order is going to ship from (since you ordered direct), and a batch might be going out on Friday... we might really have a race to Tulsa.

Ah, crap, yeah, that's not going in my machine ;-). 41cfm, that's got to be around 38dBa.

I guess I'll be replacing my case fan with something more powerful than I was expecting, I wonder if anyone has tried a more reasonable fan on the upgrades, like a couple panasonic panaflo low? I wouldn't mind dropping a couple hundred mhz to be able to hear the music the computer plays ;-)

<edit: the fan on the gigadesigns would be around 36dBa, this is quite loud for any fan, using two you're at ~40dBa, pushing just less than my current 120mm but being ~2x louder...perhaps it's time they got compatible with pc coolers or 120mm fans. I don't trust Vantec after their Stealth line, they lie horribly on their specifications)

Do your duals really need that much cooling? The 7447A/B really does seem to run cool. If you don't overclock the crap out your chips maybe you can run much quieter fans.

Posting from my 3 month old (single) silent [email protected] GHz G4...

if they got them today, they will ship out on monday because I've been told several times that they will ship out the next day. if they are waiting for them when they first get to work then I bet they might ship out that day though.

Installed my Sonnet 1.7GHz upgrade card yesterday. Did all the necessary firmware and software installs. Booted into OS 9.2.2 just fine but no go in OS X (10.3.7). Removed Sonnet card and OS X booted fine. Brought it back to Sonnet today (lucky they are only about 2 miles from home!).

Now with the old processor back in my Mac, system says I need to initialize my OS X HD! OS 9 on my other HD boots and works fine. Any ideas?

I never called. Worked all day.

I'm not going to do this $700 dance with Giga forever. I'll probably end up cancelling my order within another week or so if it doesn't ship.

Giga should have never announced these upgrades when they did. As it stands now, they have been on Giga's site for more than three months and hardly any have shipped. I honestly suspect that the only reason Giga announced these when they did was to kill some Sonnet and PowerLogix orders, which I'm sure they accomplished.
