I'm getting a little annoyed at the 3 letter extensions of files saved by certain applications. For example, when I save a PDF using Acrobat, even though the Hide Extension checkbox is clicked, files still pop up with the .pdf extension visible. The Hide Extension checkbox in Preview however seems to work fine.

Every Microsoft Office file I save ends up with the file extension visible, regardless of the setting of the Always Show File Extensions preference for the Finder.

I'm tired of having to manually do a Get Info for files and clicking the Hide Extension box. Apple apps (i.e., Keynote, Pages, Numbers, Preview, etc) seem to properly respect the Hide Extension box in the Save As... panel.

Its not just this computer or user account, either. Its both my machines, my wife's machine and my daughter's machine. Is it just something quirky about my systems, or, in nearly the year 2008, is MacOS X still that bad about file extensions?
