two options:

 Apple Education 20 (3rd gen) gig $369

or

Apple refurb 20 gig (2nd gen.) $300ish (with a dock)

So I can save $70 bucks...

why would I do the new one? Is is that much better?

anyone mess with both?
what would you do?

not sure which one u mean by second gen. but since u said dock i assume you mean the one with the touch sensitive buttons rather than the one with buttons around the touch pad? there are things u cant do with the latter (in terms of the new software) but i like the feel of the real buttons when dipping into my pocket on the run rather than the touch sensitive ones which seem a little too sensitive.

You can't use a dock with a 2nd generation pod. I'd get the 3G, smaller, newest software, but has a smaller battery....

To clarify this is the model from the Refurb section on Apple's website:

20GB MAC (prior version w/ touch pad, remote & carrying case) - Refurbished

This package contains the following items:

(1) 20G iPOD for MAC w/rechargeable lithium battery (with new touchpad)
(1) Headphones (new earbud-style)
(1) Remote and Carrying Case
(1) Apple iPod Power Adapter
(1) Apple FireWire Cable (2m)
(1) Manual:

$269

iPod 15GB (Mac & Windows)

This package contains the following items:

(1) iPod for w/rechargeable lithium battery (with new dock connection)
(1) iPod Dock
(1) Headphones (earbud-style)
(1) Remote and Carrying Case
(1) Apple iPod Power Adapter
(1) Apple FireWire Cable (2m)

$279

I'm trying to figure out if the Doc makes it that much better?

Whatever size you end up getting, buy a third generation model. It has more leg room for the future. There are a lot of add-ons out, and more coming that only work with the 3G iPods.
