I have been working on my bosses generation 1 Imac... freezes, crashes... apple tech support has been marginally helpful... He wants to trash it and buy a Imac dv... Will it be more trouble free? He is very computer illeterate and will rely upon me to set-up and keep it running. I own 3 macs and love them all... Is the imac dv stable?

well, not knowing your computing needs it is difficult to recommend anything...

what network/internet requirements?

what applications are used?

what MacOS are you using?

Staunton,

I own a blueberry iMac DV and it is extremely stable even with OS 9. But it does depend all on what kind of software he will be putting on to it. I guess all the software I have on it is compatible with eachother so I got lucky but I don't know how your bosses apps. would mix. I know that probably was not the ideal response but what can I say besides that?

Going on my third month with my iMac DV.
Not one crash or freeze.
Also, no DVD problems, no speaker "popping", no screen flicker, no hard drive noise, etc.
The ONLY times I've had to restart is if I've installed an application or extension that requires a restart. Otherwise, it just sleeps and wakes when I want it to.

I couldn't be happier.

I may have one of the most stable iMac DV SEs on the planet. I regularly manipulate gigantic graphics (over 3000x1500 pixels @ 300ppi) on it without it crashing, and that's with the standard 128 megabytes of RAM. The modem has none of the problems people complain about (slow connections, etc.), the monitor has no problems, the speakers are absolutely excellent, I run tons of applications simultaneously (again, with only the standard amount of RAM), and often with MP3s playing, which is a quite processor-intensive task. I have it linked to my Quadra 630 via a crossover cable for file sharing, and it doesn't have problems there. I rarely experience crashes on this machine. The only application that I can think of that causes crashes is the new AOL Instant Messenger 3.5 beta. I am running MacOS 9, if that makes any difference to anyone.

P.S. If you're having problems with third-party USB mice/joysticks, USB Overdrive 1.3 is the way to go!

I own a Rev. B iMac and it runs like a beauty. No problems except for running beta software. Other than that, I couldn't be happier.

My iMac DVSE is quite stable but I did have a few problems early on . Seems the original usb mouse was funky. When I bought a kensington "orbit" all problems went away. (unfortunately it was dumb luck, but I'd rather have dumb luck than no luck at all.)
Anyway, another thing I learned was even though you can "hot switch" usb, don't do it when any peripheral is running. I unplugged my scanner while I was printing and had to reinstll the system.

Guess I didn't exactly clear the air for ya.

Oh well, refer to my screename.
