Has anyone noticed this yet? A machine with os9 can't be put into sleep from the new login screen.

On public terminals this would really be a benefit and for people that share PowerBooks / iBooks this could tremendously help preserve batteries.

I noticed this right away on my PowerBook. If you press the power button it does give you the standard dialog box for sleep-shutdown and so on. Not the nicest but, it is an option.
