OK, let's say your significant other that you've grown used to over the years is gone overseas for six months... Your routine is shot...

what do you do to occupy your time, pick up a hobby, better yourself, etc... in the meantime?

And NO! It is not lurk around this forum for hours a day.

Let's say you want to CHANGE what you already do.

What was something that you used to do before you met your significant other that you haven't had the time to do as much lately? Find that, and start doing it again...

I would try doing something you have always wanted to do but haven't had the time/money/energy to do.

For example I always wanted learn how to ice skate, in particular do figure skating and do turns and jumps etc, so this year I am learning how to skate. I've been going for nearly 2 months now and i'm learning how to do mohawk turns, spread eagle turns etc. Luckily its an adult class of about 15 people and we all laugh at ourselves when we fall over.

You could also try learning a language ...

Get a hobby. And get a plan going on keeping touch (iChat video and .Mac for blogging and creating web pages is nice) . The iDisk helps some.
As summer is coming, get a gym membership. Buy an XBox and live it up some. If you're not planning on moving, consider getting a dog. Companionship and something to keep you active.

So, drinking myself into a stupor is not a good option, huh? OK. Tomorrow is the first day. Where to start...? Hmmmmmmm... I think I'll work 12 hours first... then... uhhhh.... I'll sleep on it and check in then. Or maybe I won't, I haven't been doing well at the night-sleep, though day-sleeping works. Got 3 dogs. They don't seem to mind.

I'll vouch for the ones here in AZ.

Or sleep in for a week, she'll be back before you even realize 6 months have gone by.
Or pan for gold.
See how many days in a row you can go snowboarding.
Panhandle for beer money or a Vegas trip.
Go fishing with a bunch of 12 oz. friends.

World of Warcraft

You'll have no idea where the time went.

And as a bonus, depending on where she is or what she is doing, she can get an account too so you can play together.

While I was overseas for a year, my wife went to school, trained her dog (a puppy when I left), kept up with our son...lots of things. I was the one who had problems with what to do, since my assignment was pretty dull. I got seriously into fitness-bicycled 8 miles every other day or so (sometimes I ran a couple miles instead to keep things lively), studied programming more (my degree was already pretty stale then), and did some volunteer stuff.

Keys to maintaining sanity: stay focused on something, stay in touch with SO and others, and work out a schedule to keep to. It's not really hard, it's just a chore to do anything, but once you set up this new routine, you'll do fine.

Note that it's often more difficult when the SO returns, since you will have developed differently during his/her absence, and along lines he/she didn't necessarily share. Homecoming should be in three stages: honeymoon (yipee!), meeting all over again (learn what each other have been doing, gotten to like or dislike, become reacquainted), then settling down again. BOTH OF YOU HAVE TO WORK AT THIS. You might not believe how many military mariages fail because the couple doesn't bother to communicate when they reunite. Above all, COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY. Really, really communicate.

Good luck, and keep us informed.

When reading some of the advice above one really wonders where exactly the 2342 views in the "Expanded MacNN Profile" thread come from - certainly not from some of the folks lending a "helping hand" in here ...

Lose 20 lbs, get in great shape, grow a beard / or shave it, tweeze eyebrow ,
wax your back, and other netharious regions you know she'd love to wax for you,
get a tan, read a lot of poetry (ready up for her return), abstain from anything toxic.

Become a better person for when she returns!
She'll flip... then when she returns, tell her you want to renew your wedding vows.

Read lots of books and send the ones you like to your partner.

Or take a selfdefence class and kick her butt when she comes back for leaving in the first place.

So many good idea and pieces of advice- (and one REALLY Bad one!)

I have started today with a new outlook. I am determined to do many of the things mentioned here.

I will start a workout routine and change in diet. I have some things to with my portfolio and such. Now to fill the gaps in the rest of the time.

I/We have spent so much of the last 2 years falling into a routine and definitely a rut. This is a chance for us both to get out and hopefully be happier as a result.

Glenn, you make some very good points- fortunately, we are both after the same goal and I think that will help. Plus, we are able to communicate via email and web cam and phone as of next week- so that keeps the lines open in the meanitm.

Thanks. Maybe I should get off my ass now and get going!!!! Weeeeeee!!
