I just picked up a used iphone 3g since my phone cracked. Do I need to do any thing special take out the sim card etc or do I just go to itunes and activate it? Also how do I back up my iphone to the computer to load to the new iphone i got. I don't have a computer so I am using a friends laptop.

Make sure you sync your *old* phone to your friends computer to establish a backup. Once that is done it should be a fairly simple process:
iPhone: Transferring information from your current iPhone to a new iPhone

I would imagine the following.
1) Sync old phone with iTunes (->backup)
2) Shut off both phones
3) Insert SIM of old phone into new phone
4) Start new phone
5) Sync new phone with iTunes (->restore)
