Thanks for the heads up, standalone combo updater here…

Apple - Support - Downloads - Mac OS X 10.5.3 Combo Update

Mine is also listed as 420 but with three Macs over a slow dsl I just use the standalone updater…

Just curious, does anyone know if 10.5.3/Safari breaks the current PithHelmet?

No problems yet? I am usually a maverick and will install the update immediately but I think I'll hold out until my new backup drive comes.

According to the PithHelmet web site, v2.8.3(a) is compatible with Safari 3.1.x.

So if the new 10.5.3/Safari is still v3.1.1, I hope to avoid the SIMBL workaround. Still, the workaround is easy enough. My not being lazy, ah, now that comes closer to the issue.

I can happily say that finally, when opening a pdf that has been ocr'ed the OS does not have to re-index it. Finally!

My powerbook's battery will sing with joy - no more cpu being pegged at 100% for ten minutes every-time I open a pdf then close it by accident - only to reopen it to "indexing"!

The combo updater took only about six MINUTES to install on my MacBook.

Three hours is definitely not right.

Issue #1
My Time Machine drive was showing on the desktop after the update, even though my Finder preferences said it shouldn't. I ejected the drive and reconnected it. It no longer shows on my desktop, but it's been a couple of hours and I still can't access Time Machine. Current status: Preparing Backup.

Issue #2
I have .Mac syncing set to automatic. The first sync with 10.5.3 produced something like 47 conflicts. Ugh! I went through 'em one by one... Most of 'em were for appointments back in 2006-2007. WTF!?
______________
I'm excited Google Contacts now sync. Here's to hoping the sync conflicts were a one time glitch, as that's a great feature. I just wish Google Calender would sync through .Mac, too.

Did anybody else get the Setup Assistant going through the "Welcome to Leopard" video and wanting to re-register your Mac, even though you were upgrading?

Was anybody else annoyed by this?

Absolutely no probs at all.

Delayed restart till I was ready, then got progress bar, not seen that before, then restarted OK

420mb installation.

Not noticed any difference since upgrade, except iMac did seem to start up quicker.

XBench Summary show similar results (120ish), faster memory etc, slower disc access.

8800GT performance

Preliminary testing says ProApps performance is up!

Barefeats test (with better system than mine in parenthesis):
Atom Strand: 14.93 (16.4)
Dotted Axis: 17.89 (30.4) !
Directions: 19.68 (21.2)
Blocks detail: 58.92 (could not fit everything in RAM, rendered 9 seconds only)
Brush Open: 25.26 [PAL], 23.99 [NTSC] (25.2)
Light Open: 39.49 (46.5)
Satin Blue Background: 31.76 (34.4)
Sketch Open: 24.5 (23.2)

Notes: Testing was very unscientific. Specs are Mac Pro 2.66 Mac OS X (10.5.3) 4 GB Ram, 8800GT, 6.66 TB + 150GB 10K RPM Raptor vs BF's "Early 2008" 16GB RAM machine. And also BF does not mention if they are using NTSC or PAL templates. Still results seem to have improved in most cases. Obviously this should have been tested against my own machine running 10.5.2, but I didn't have time to run those tests. Suffice to say it "feels" faster.

I have been on the phone with Apple engineering and they are constantly working on new drivers and are very aware of the problems. Obviously he couldn't give me any details, but he said that because the 8800 is a newer card they had to write their drivers for stability first, optimisation second. That's the part they are working on now. He also said there would be improvement "soonish". I'm guessing the 10.5.3 update was what he was talking about. If you want to help them directly, sign up for a student ADC account and file your bugs and test cases at http://bugreporter.apple.com. Apple is listening and is working on it.

Downloaded the combo updater and it installed fine on my MBP. It froze for 10+ minutes at 97% writing files on my Mac mini, and I force quit Installer and ran it again. It -reported- that it was all dandy that time .

The iTunes dashboard widget -still- doesn't work, and still crashes easily so I've reported that one for the 14th time or so.

Time will tell if my sleep issues, SMB issues and FTP issues have been resolved.

Anybody notice any change in TIme Machine performance when backing up to a Time Capsule wirelessly?

Before today, I've seem backup of only a few megabytes take 30 minutes from mount to unmount; I attribute it to the wireless connection, as direct connections via Ethernet are MUCH faster on a routine basis. Still, that much time for such a small backup?

I switched off TM whule downloading the combo updater and switched it on after the update; doing a deep transversal now, we'll see how performance changes over the next few days.

My DuoCore 2.0 machine has been on the blue screen for over an hour...Not good! I am tempted to hit the damn power button! I wonder if my external HDs are causing it to hang up.
My Core2Duo Macbook updated in 5 minutes...That one went smooth at least.

Say, that's like what it did for me, except I took their warning not to interrupt the install seriously, and didn't force quit, and then it took 3 hours, and then the progress bar disappeared, and it sat there for another half an hour doing nothing apparent, and I decided to help it along, thinking "maybe mds is just being annoying", and now it won't boot. Thankfully I did a backup beforehand, but still. One expects better when doing system updates. They could have at least stuck with the old model of "do the update before quitting all apps" so that I could've looked at the installer to see what the hell it was doing that was taking so long. I guess I'll just try to re-run the standalone combo updater...

Did you do Software update, or download the combo installer from Apple ?

I'd try the latter (again).
