I want to use the Docunium vlc media icons instead of the default option. I've replaced all icons within the VLC app itself. The icons will switch after a reboot, but if I reboot again, all of the media icons have changed to the generic white document. To get them changed from this point, I have to reinstall vlc and replace the icons again. Is there something I'm missing to keep them as the Docunium icons? I know this has never been a problem before

Have you tried changing them with CandyBar? Click the "Apps" toolbar item, drag VLC in and then you can swap the icons without them being replaced and such.

Yeah, but Candybar only recognizes 4 file types out of the 20ish that VLC actually contains.

Control-click VLC, "Show Package Contents," and open "Resources."

Opening VLC's package and replacing the .icns files worked for me. I'm using that slick black icon set (I forget what it's called).

That's what I did. They'll switch over ok after a reboot, but another reboot changes them to the white document icon, even though the icns files are still the same.

Chad, I used VLC to replace the filetype icons with these:

I just used the "App Extras" section and that was all the file types that it recognized. I am pretty sure that is all of them.

Any chance of trying Candybar again and seeing if it works this time after a re-install of the app itself?

Fusion, where'd you find those icons?

I was going to ask that as well

Josh...now I remember why I replaced them in VLC instead of Candybar. They are icns files and the preview image was the default icns file icon. Changing them in Candybar only showed that icns file icon. Ran them through pic2icon and they applied fine. I'm assuming they'll stay after the reboots as well.

That's good to hear. The problem you were having may have been a result of OS X caching issues. Did you try using MacJanitor or a similar program to clean that stuff out? Or did you try to manually do so?

Glad to hear you got it all sorted out.

As for the icons, I made them because I hated the default ones and liked Quicktime's. Would people want them if I threw them up for download?

stradlater: macjanitor will only do what OS X does automatically, by my understanding. I'll have to take a look at it later. Thanks for the heads up.

I too dislike VLC's icons. If you're willing, I say go ahead and make them available.

I'd love to use those if you released them! However, could you make it more complete? The VLC replacement icon sets I'v used so far have been missing icons. The are 30 total in the VLC package (including the app icon). The one I see the most that no one makes is generic.icns. MKV files get this icon since there's no MKV icon.

It might not be MacJanitor. There's definitely an app or two out there that sorts out caching issues in Finder, etc.

I did all the ones that showed up when I dragged VLC onto Candybar for App Extras. Can you list all filetypes that you do not see in the picture I posted above? I can for sure add some more before I release it if I missed some.

Look in VLC.app/Contents/Resources/

I think you're missing these, but you might want to double check yourself:
AAC
ACC
BLANK (I guess you *do* have this one, called it MEDIA?)
MOV
MP4
MPEG1
MPEG2
MPEG4 (different from MP4!)
MPG (different from the other MPEGs!)
