I don't think a lot changed in 3.2.3, but I'm honestly not sure. Can you copy the string in the About Safari dialog (like "Version 4.0 (5530.17)")?

2 grudges for me:

Would like the Reload/Stop button back to the left of address bar.

It's screwed up Transmission for me. FF lead a torrent file into Trans. then deleted said file. Trans. prefs are all good, but not with Saf. 4. Yet.

Otherwise? Sweet.

(I've switched. -Again.) grrr...

Does exporting ics files not open them automatically in iCal anymore? When did this happen?

Very annoying since I didn't notice until I had missed a couple of events

After finding out there was a close-enough alternative to AdBlock in Safari, I decided to try it for a while.

So far I'm liking it, plus the speed and smaller RAM footprint are always welcome.

Anyway, had to install a couple of plugins to add must-have functionality (Safari AdBlock and Keywurl for keyword searches and shortcuts).

There are still some things I miss though,
1) More options to deal with tabs. I want -everything- that opens, to do it as a new tab and never on new windows. (Yup, I checked the "open links from apps in..." option).
2) Command+Number to select tabs. Current functionality will open the corresponding bookmark from the Bookmarks Bar, which I find to be a huge mistake. On any given day I have much more use for tab selection than visiting my bookmarked sites. Currently I can use Cmd+shift+arrow to switch tabs, but this is highly annoying since you need to us eboth hands to do so.
3) Multitouch. FF's 3 finger swipe for page up/down.
4) The Awesome Bar. FF's URL/search bar is a very useful feature. Safari should allow similar fuctionality.
5) CMD+enter adds "www." and ".com" to anything you type on the address bar.
6) Restore session (all open tabs) and Undo Close Tab.

Also, apple.com/feedback has no link for Safari, strange.

Is it just me, or are Safari 4's tabs wider than 3's? I'm very much against this. I liked Safari's small tabs - it meant I could have more tabs open before they started getting hidden. My work computer with a 1280x1024 resolution can only have 5 tabs in Firefox before they start disappearing or getting resized.

Yes they are, I noticed this immediately. I also agree, though it should be noted they don't get hidden so much as shrunk.

The new tabs are large and in charge.

They shrink until they reach a certain size, then the tab bar starts hiding them, just like in Safari 3.

I'd like to upgrade to Safari 4, but I'm sufficiently happy with Safari 3 right now.

If you make a copy of Safari 3 or get a copy from Time Machine, will it refuse to launch?

I tried with a copy of 3.2.1 from Time Machine and yes, it launches and works. It still uses the WebKit version that is installed on the system though, so I don't know why anybody would want to do that. Now that the tabs are back into their own bar, the interface is hardly different.

Uninstall AdBlock and Keywurl, use a HOST file and Click2Flash for adblocking, and Glims for Awesome Bar functionality, keyword search, (automatic*) session restore, undo and pretty much everything else.

As for 5) anything you type into the url bar without www. and .com automatically gets it when you hit enter?

And Safari -> Report bugs to Apple is where you send feedback.

* Automatic, as in Safari already has session restore if you go to History -> Reopen All Windows From Last Session

The Java update released this week appears to have resolved this problem.

Any sign or modifications out there to get tabs up top above the URL bar? I'm still on the relatively stable Safari 4 Beta. I have no need to upgrade right now - this tabbed browsing is more preferable for me - and everything works.

Nope. It's no more possible to get tabs on top with Safari 4 than it was with 3.

Will this not work

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop -bool TRUE

( i have no idea about command stuff... just putting false in the beta disabled it)

It's surprising that the design wasn't just turned off and made inaccessible to normal users but that it was actually ripped out completely. Apple's programmers don't normally do that. I guess a decision was made that the implementation wasn't good enough even to be left in at all.

My guess is that the current tab bar is actually based off the tabs-on-top one rather than the original, and coding in an option to put it back on top just wasn't a priority.

Yes, it worked really nicely under OS 9.

Having the mail, editor, and browser combined into one application is attractive.
Different strokes, obviously - the fact that the damn thing always installed and loaded ALL those modules when all I wanted was the browser (Eudora was *so* much better at e-mail) annoyed the hell out of me and was one of the points that finally caused me to ditch it (in favor of OmniWeb at the time).

Custom CSS?

Custom CSS?
It's worked just fine under OS X. To be honest if you have a big machine (i.e. Mac Pro) you can pretty much run whatever browser you want and not have a big loss of performance. However I do have limitations on my antique iBook clamshell. Safari actually runs the fastest on my iBook since it uses the least resources.

CSS, I don't know the first thing about it, nor do I have the time to learn. So having a mod ready to install for ad blocking on Safari would be nice for the rest of us who don't do custom filtering.

We were talking about the interface, not performance.

I'm afraid I have no clue about CSS either, but there's been a couple links floating around the forum every once in a while, and I used to use a custom CSS sheet to great effect back before I stopped blocking ads (personal thing - I like free content and don't mind that they're supported by ads)

This looks promising, though:

You can not revert back. If you have regular crashes I would suspect it's a extension hack that causes it. Can you post the crash log?

i really wish safari handled links/tabs like firefox. that's one of my only gripes now that i have safariblock and little snitch to do what noscript does. i'm used to just clicking an outside link, like the one AKcrab has in his post, and having it automatically open in a new tab, instead of a new window.

not all who wander are lost.

Post a complete crash log including the loaded libraries, so that we can see which haxies you have installed.

I started having a recurrence of the same crash I mentioned previously in this thread. So I thought I would just stop using Safari for opening that folder into tabs, but then I started experiencing other crashes. I deleted all plugins (SIMBL, SafariStand, etc.) from /Library/ and ~/Library and reinstalled Safari 4 but it still bombs. But it is fine on two other machines, another MacBook (late 2009) and an iMac (late 2009). So I believe it to be something specific to my machine, be it a plugin or something that I just overlooked or haven't tracked down yet.

Since the Safari 4.0.2 update says it "improves Nitro engine stability", does it help anyhow?
