I just got a Mac SE for $5..I have a system disk for Mac OS 6.0.8...should I upgrade to OS 7.1, or will that slow down the system?

You Could put on it but with that 8-bit 68000 it will be slow. I had a SE and I got it on the net under 6.0.8 using some extensions from 7.1

I would keep it with 6.x

7.x seems to slow them down quite a bit.

Hard drive size is also a major consideration.

SE's originally came with either two floppy drives or a 20 MB hard drive. Either way, you don't get much space to store an operating system. Since a complete system 6 system folder can fit on a floppy, it is more efficient than System 7, which requires at least 5 MB if you have any extensions, fonts, etc. on your computer.

However, if you have a hard drive that is bigger than 20 MB, and enough RAM, it's probably best to at least try system 7, because almost all software made in the last 7 or 8 years requires it.

I have some SEs, and I believe at least one of them has only 2MB of RAM with System 7.1

Try here

ftp://ftp.uconn.edu/pub/mac/apple_mirror/system/Older_System/System_6.0.x/

and maybe
http://w3.trib.com/~dwood/oldmac.html

for apps and stuff. I hope the second one works -- but I know that the first one works since I just went there.
