When I lived in Vegas, blackjack was a near addiction.

I once had a gambling addiction. For a weekend. At Foxwoods Casino up in the northeast. I got there, walked in, won at Keno, then went to the slots and won $20,000 in an hour on the .25 slot machines. I then spent the weekend playing slot machines - I couldn't stop. The adrenaline rush was overpowering. I've never gone to another casino since. I know, though, that if I lived in the proximity of a good casino that I probably would.

A weekend is more of an obsession than an addiction. Now, when you finish work at midnight then head to the casino for seven hours or so of playing, get home around 7.30 am, sleep for a few hours, go to the gym (sometimes) and back to work, it gets to be much.
But I wasn't as bad as some. One co-worker had to bunk with people for more than a week (I kept him for a couple of nights) because he lost his entire paycheck playing poker one night and was a couple of months late for rent. He was locked out until the next payday.

No. I'm addicted. I've been invited to go to Vegas on many occasions - once for free with colleagues from work - and I passed on it on purpose. I know that I would sit there like an automaton in front of the stupid slot machines and feed them quarters for hours on end. I know it. It's sort of like being an alcoholic: You have to avoid it altogether.

If it a mental adiction, I think you shouldn't avoid it because then you are just asking to get hooked again. If you are addicted to gambling, I think its a better idea to get help rather than trying to avoid casinos. You never know when someone is going to drop a wager on your lap.

I second the coffee addiction.
(I think that coffee is a physical addiction ... if I don't have a few cups a day I get MASSIVE headaches.)
I'm down to 7-8 cups a day now .... (Plus another litre of diet coke)

Caffiene. Absolutely and completely addicted. Physicians who evaluate people for migranes often ask them if they drink coffee, and if they've suddenly stopped because the withdrawal from caffiene often gives people a headache on the same magnitude as a migrane-though the two types of headaches are quite different in mechanism, a caffiene headache is often at the same level of intensity as a serious migrane. So I get my fix every day like the good junkie I am, and everything is fine!
Of course it's fun to watch the 18-20 year olds at school "jonesing" for their Starbucks! I just take it straight with some half-and-half, but these kids need all sorts of fancy fixes! Grande latte with THREE shots!?!? Holy coffee grounds, Batman!
Driven, you NEED to cut down! That much coffee (with the Diet Coke on top of it) causes you to urinate far too much, and can deplete your electrolytes enough to cause all sorts of BAD problems! Plus the caffiene stimulates more than wakefullness...I spent about three hours of "quality time" in a porcelain sanctuary once because of that much coffee, and I certainly did NOT feel that it was worth the cost!

I've been figuring that it's my only vice so I haven't been too worried about it.
I normally drink Dunkin Donuts (which is low-test really) ... but I'm stuck in the UK for a tad so I've been drinking Starbucks. (and tea). That is certainly more potent. I'll be in bad shape when I finally get home. (Hopefully by July!) <GRIN>

1. Cigarettes.
2. Internet.
3. Women(not joking about this)
4. Sex(not joking about this)
5. Coke(the drink, not the white stuff)
That's all I can think of at the moment.
My family is full with addicts and I get very easily addicted to anything that I like. Because of that I'm trying to cut down on my addictions but it ain't going too well.

You wear codpieces on your elbows? What a silly thing to do.
I'm addicted to caffeine and nicotine. Although, the nicotine thing isn't really for the nicotine. It's an oral fixation. If I tell myself that for long enough, I'll start to believe it.

I have some near-addictions.
I LOVE rare and first edition books, signed books, etc.
I have to force myself to stay away from eBay sometimes because I have no more room for them. I have several collections, first editions, including some collections that have gone on loan to universities. Those collections include the first edition set of Mein Kampf (which my grandfather bought when he left Europe - as a Jew), Emily Dickinson, all of Sylvia Plath's first editions, American and those published in Great Britain, Wilkie Collins ( The Woman in White is one of the best mysteries ever written, period), a substantial Charles Dickens library including one of his small notebooks with handwritten notes (which has gone on loan several times), works by Kate Chopin and signed copies of The Awakening), and contemporary fiction by some friends, such as John Dufresne, Nick Sparks, and I have all of John Irving's novels, signed, even the limited edition books.
I also have about 50 screenplays for movies, signed by the original authors and/or directors, including some oldies like Some Like It Hot, signed by director and cast (Billy Wilder, Robert Thoeren, Michael Logan, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe), and some others, including Jerry Maguire, signed by Cameron Crowe, Cruise, Zellweger, Cuba Gooding, etc.
I collect antiques, including antique sewing machines. We restore them. I have an entire collection of antique sewing machines that are restored and can be sewed on.
I've also written books on quilting - as in sewing - that are currently in discussion for publication (as in the lawyers are talking) because I love to make quilts and I've given many workshops around the country on the subject. I am addicted to quilting. I love to collect and buy vintage and antique fabrics to quilt with. There is something very satisfying about having a fabric concept with colors and textures and taking tiny pieces of fabric, sewing them together, and making an intricate and beautiful piece that is inspired by memories. Although some would say that quilting is a "girl thing," you'd be surprised at how many men also quilt. Some of the quilts sell for up to $100,000 such as the quilts that are extremely old and are restored.

They look very similar to me. I guess that an obsession isn't at all ever chemical based. It is entirely psychological and most likely easier to abstain from. An addiction is more serious as it can be caused by a chemical dependency, such as Caffeine. One cannot be obsessed with caffeine chemically, but one can be obessesed with the idea of coffee.
You aren't as sick as you think you are! Good news!

"Obsession" has negative connotations, though, such as being accompanied by anxiety and states "unreasonable idea or emotion."
I think that "addiction," as I used, is more apropos.
They even stated, "I had an addiction to fast cars."
Well, I have an addiction to buying rare books. I get a high out of receiving it in the mail or FedEx, touching it, smelling it, touching the signature of the person who signed it - sometimes over 200 years ago - and just having it.
Thanks for the definitions, budster!

Stradlater, that was VERY funny!
I'm working out this morning trying to stay in shape and people here are talking about my being pregnant?
I saw this and I literally swallowed my soy milk (I LOVE that stuff - Silk brand - try it) the wrong way!

I mentioned my compulsion to buy folding knives at 2:00 a.m., right? (<-link to blog entry)
I did it again a couple weeks ago. $30 knives for $35. That's a pretty good deal, right?
Right?
For God's sake somebody tell me I'm right!!
