so true. its sad when these non Micro$oft makers are able to do all the things the new version of msn messenger for windows can and they cant.

Micro$oft i think just slacks off on it. wanting mac users to buy a pc to get the best out of there products.

I don't think it's that M$ can't make the Mac version of messenger with the same features as the Windows version ... I think it's that they don't want to. Instant messaging is among the most common activities for online computing, M$ wants to keep IMing on Windows superior to IMing on a Mac

Vs.

On the other hand, when every time I ask someone if they have AIM they respond "What? Oh you mean MSN?", I would at least like some kind of feature parity with the useful stuff (audio/video chat).

has to be one of the worst interfaces ever MSN on windows.
+I mean whats with that up and down arrow button in the top left of the windows? You click it and lose the titlebar etc and the whole window is draggable likean osx metal window but then you click it back and the window looks exactly the same but has a title bar and the content isnt draggable. Whats the point of all that?
+Doesnt remember if you closed the buddy icon things, have to do it every time
+Dragging image file on to a window changes the background, not sending the file which catches me out every time
+SEARCH BUTTON UNDER THE SEND BUTTON!!!!! yet another advert, do we really need about 5 msn search buttons all over our screen. Clearly just there to catch accidental clicks.
+Yet another msn search box/button on the contact list

ugh its just a total disaster

The interface on windows is soooo soooo horrible but every PC head that uses it doesn't see much wrong with it. Can they all be that stupid?

it seems that Microsoft is updating its sites. Because someone on Neowin reported that the Australian site has an updated Microsoft Messenger(as it's now called) page.

So much hate, but yet very few saying if the software actually works well and if the features, such as they are, are actually useful and well-implemented. Some useful reviews would be nice. Not childish posts filled with "M$ blows!!" and the like. Plenty of that on Versiontracker right now.

Well at LEAST it supports "display pictures" now. It still should be more like version 3, considering all the features they've not added since 1.0 (though Apple's kinda done the same with iTunes).

Oh and it's brushed. Now With Tabs.™ Looks like they're calling it "Microsoft Messenger" now too, which is probably more appropriate since it's a lot closer to the free "Windows Messenger" (the one that comes with XP) than that awful looking bloated "MSN Messenger."

Yuck, this is a whole lot of nothing.

I just want 2 damn things.

1) being able to send files properly to 100% of the people i try to send stuff to

2) Webcam support even if it is one way.

How can you turn off the useless tab bar? I don't have a "corporate" account, so it's just wasting space and making me wish I had actual tabs.

I want one thing: Able to make names for my contacts (aliases as Mercury calls them). Hell, this doesn't even support personal messages. Load of *$%"#.

Nice interface though. Clean and professional.

Oh by the way, Mercury supports most everything MSN on Windows supports. Including two-way video-chat and reliable file-transfers (and all the gimmicky stuff like nudges). Interface isn't as nice, stability is low in the betas and it needs a bit of configuring to work the way you want it, but hey - it's the best there is unfortunately.

Adium is damn fine. So it has a duck and no video chat and lousy file transfer.

I use it for text chatting and it has the best, cleanest and most inviting interface of all IM software I've tried. It supports AIM as well as MSN in the same app too. Many of us Mac users have both MSN and AIM contacts so...

Video chat is like MMRPGs. I just don't see the point. I'm not that much of a nerd.

Good to see that MS is still supporting the Mac (half handed as so often with Messenger and WiMP but hey)

cheers

Actually they kinda stopped that with iTunes... It quickly went v1->v4 and it's been at 4.x for over two years.

My bad, I saw tabs mentioned on Microsoft's website and thought they meant for chat, I guess they think having tabs for "Personal" and "Corporate" is a really cool feature to advertise.

I noticed a couple of things about the new release that are definitely a step back from the previous version:

1. The application no longer tries to automatically reconnect to the MSN network when the machine awakes from sleep.

2. The dock icon no longer reflect your online status. You have to click the icon and open up the window to show this information now.

All in all, this is a pretty lame release if you don't use the "corporate" features. I imagine #2 above was done because a user could have one status on the "personal" side and another status on the "corporate" side .... but I imagine most users will never use the "corporate" features. It would have been nice if the user could specify which status the dock icon reflected rather than implement nothing at all. Besides who knows how many corporations even have Microsoft's IM server software installed? Probably not many.

This just isn't acceptable. I've already gone back to the old version because of this CRAP.

Well I just ditched MSN Messenger and iChat and went with Adium. One client for both services. Much nicer interface with the "Unified toolbar" look. My only concern is that there are reports of flakiness with file transfers but I don't really do that very often. I was able to send a couple of pics to a friend using MSN Messenger on a PC without incident however. I just really wish Adium supported an iChat message style. I really like the text bubbles and the icons being on opposite sides of the window. I figure I will fire up iChat if I need to do an audio or video chat (if I ever get an iSight) which is rare. I'm mainly doing text chats and for that Adium seems to cover all the bases rather nicely.

Why must the Adium devs jump on every UI bandwagon Apple brings to the table, first BM now Unified

MSN 5.0: been using this a while now, proxy support has been dragged through the gutter, many disconnections without telling me, people cant get messages off me sometimes unless i start a new convo window and it crashes about 1 in ever 6 times when i drag an image off safari on to the text field, I do this about 30 times a day because its the fastest way to get a url of an image to someone
