I was hot to get an AppleTV, but now am considering alternatives. Mainly because streaming 1080i is not and good idea... and AppleTV only supports up to 540p @ 30fps!

Why not use a Mac Mini and Front Row? This way I'm not limited to .m4v files and a small local drive

SO considering the main intent is to watch VERY large files in 1080i (as small as 2gb/hr or 40gb/hr depending on how I compress them) off of a large external drive. What would be the minimum level to stick with Intel or could I drop to a PPC? Any reason to go Core Duo or Core 2 Duo for my intent? I need DVI out (which I believe they all have).

You shouldn't cross-post. Anyway, save advice as in the other thread. Make sure you get a C2D. A CS or PPC won't be sufficient for your needs.

Actually no intent on cross-posting, the other post just not sure which to get... can't ask Mini questions in the MB forum

I don't intend on worrying about 1080p. All my components max out at 720p/1080i. Plus it's going to be some time before 1080p video camera/software is ready for consumer (non-pro) use.

That said, is a Core Duo or even a Core Solo able to playback h.264 720p or 1080i without drops, stuttering, etc?

A CD might just be barely sufficient for 720p. A CS definitely not. And when it comes to 1080i you will definitely need a C2D.

I have a 1.6ghz Mini with 2gb ram. VLC playing BD rips means nothing else can be running at the same time if I want the video to not suffer.

What are you BDs ripped at -- res and bitrate? I'm having trouble getting advice on 720p/1080i files which have about half the data as 1080p. My projector is 720p native and camcorder is 1080i.

I just ran a couple 720p tests through iMovie. The h.264 at high is 25Mbps and medium is 9Mbps. I've yet to test these on my C2D MBP or my wife's CD.

Again, I'm just trying to find a higher quality option than the AppleTV which limits me to 540p @ 4-5Mbps with iMovie.

No intent to cross-thread, just not sure whether to go Mini or MB. Don't expect a MB user to be here unless they also have a Mini.
