What is the best way to send big files to a friends computer? We are talking about uncutted digital video files here,2 GB is common. Not burning them on CD,but sharing over the net?
Should I set up a FTP server for this, and if yes, how?

We shared some 200 MB .mov files using Aimster, but that is no option whit 2 gig.....
(I'm on cable, she is on DSL,btw, and she is a Windows victim.....)

I've done something on this order before (a bunch of digital music) and I found that the easiest way was to set up an FTP server on my Mac and then upload. It took quite a while, but then again, we ARE talking about 2GB of data.

It really depends on your cable service provider. I have att broadband (cable) and uploading is dreadfully slow. The max i can usually get is 10-15k per second, compared to 100-200k down. If your friend who has dsl is sending you files, it would probably be faster (though not much) as many DSL providers have faster upload speeds.

The easiest would be an external firewire drive, but I suppose since you want to do it over the net, this is not an option for you.

Setting up ftp access in 10.1 is fairly easy. Just go into the system preferences, sharing, and select the check box for "allow ftp access." Copy your IP address, set up a user account for your friend (with access to the files you want to share), and then they can use fetch, ws_ftp, cuteftp or whatever to connect and transfer.

Good luck!!

Mike

Pete,

I have personally not used anything besides the FTP server within OSX, this all pretty new to me.

But, there are several things you could try.

First, CrushFTP Server for Classic. I have never used it but heard mixed reviews. "Good quality and reliable, but a little difficult to set up." Try: http://tfbbs.com/Crush/homepage.html

Secondly, you could try setting up a Carracho Server. www.carracho.com Setup one account name for your friend and just share the files you wish to share. Your friend could also upload simultaneously (Not possible in many FTP servers). I think this is pretty easy to do.

Good luck,
mike

Setting up an FTP server works well, because if you make it private (as in you don't share your address), file transfers will be wicked fast, as long as you have a decent connection both ways.

If your friend was a Mactinsoh user, I'd suggest setting up a Carracho server.

Carracho is actually way better and way faster than Hotline.

Thanks for all the replies,I'm going to look into those!

Is it possible for a Windows victim to use Carracho or Hotline?

1. Hotline is faster protocol wise.
2. Hotline is MUCH more stable.
3. Carracho doesn't EXIST for Windows so it isn't an option anyway!

HOWEVER... I don't believe Hotline can handle file sizes that big. When trying to copy files that big over my LAN with HL I had problems; but those incidents may have been because of something else. I dunno. I just used AppleShare instead.

Set up an FTP and make sure the server supports resuming...

It'd be so much easier to physically send it.

And with Carracho, too.
BTW, in OS 9 Carracho used to crash all the time. In OS X, it is much more stable (at least on my iMac).
