I went ahead and compiled PHP for Apache, which I think makes it a module (?). I read on the apache site that because they rebuilt the API it breaks support for many "3rd party modules". Should I wait till there is an update of PHP for apache?

If you are concerned about stability and things working properly, then it's generally not a good idea to go installing the very first public beta release of just about anything. Just a handy rule of thumb.
