...OK, so we're going to get into the "What is the final build?" question here pretty soon. I just wanted to note something I found out today.

I walked into the Apple Store at Tysons, and they had one of the new widescreen iMacs on display (easily identifiable not just by the wide screen, but by the fact that "iMac" is in that new sans-serif font rather than the classic Apple Garamond). So I was playing around with it, and noticed some 10.2 features. Curious, I checked the About this Mac screen, and sure enough, it was.

Build number 6C98, that is.

This wouldn't be the first time they put a prerelease build into the stores for people to play with, but before, if I remember right those were all slated to be final builds. So, I pose a question: is 6C98 the final? Are these 6C1xx builds floating around on threads here merely hoaxes? Will there be another 6C98 build (actually fairly likely this time if 6C98 is final, given that the compiler was finished just a couple of days ago and 6C98's been out for a couple of weeks)?

Please lock your own thread. This is just stupid and nothing else than brain dead. Why would the final build number matter to anyone anyway? Just wait a see, geez...!!

No.

6C98 is not final, nor is it even an fc.

Neither is 6C106.

On another note: Millennium, as a knowledgeable moderator, I can't believe that you'd even say something as completely wrong as you did in hinting that there would be "another build" of 6C98. The very statement "another build" is oxymoronic, because, by their very nature and purpose, build numbers only identify a single, unique build. While this is all moot since 6C98 isn't fc, gmc, or gm anyway, I still am somewhat dumbfounded that you'd stoop so low as to lend credence to such a theory: people look up to you here, and we STILL have people who believe there were multiple 4K78's, for Christ's sake, even after being shown categorically that wasn't the case! I'd almost consider your post a troll, but I know better coming from you...

I can't say for certain, but I doubt that we will have an FC/GM build for a week or two. I have a few people on the 'inside' (or more 'inside' than me!) that I wil be asking, but since the kernel for 6C106 was build only 4 days ago. I read reports that the build at MWNY was C98, so it its good enough for MWNY, maybe its good enoug to show off a bit early.

I played with C98 for a while, but didn't notice any bugs, but again, it was only for a while.

My guess, they'll take the 2 weeks or so that they have left for spit and polish.

Yeah I'm having a hard time believing that this thread is even here. 6C98 is not FC/GM...and 6C106 is not a hoax, it comes straight from ADC.

Regardless, I don't think we've seen the end of these builds. There were plenty of bugs in 6C98, and even a few still in 6C106 that I've seen, so I'm sure we'll see a few more builds before a GM is declared.

Bottom line...what does it matter, people? The GM will be the build that Apple deems is ready for primetime. With several weeks still to go, why rush things?

There is another build of 6c98 without the debug code.

I agree that it doesn't make any difference what the build number is right now, but since the feature set is locked, there is nothing left to talk about except build numbers and, lets not forget, snappiness.

Stay tuned for an encrypted message about OS X.

6c98 can't be final...it hard crashes my Dual-800 randomly...this is on a clean install.

Lock your thread Millennium, this is pretty pathetic. Also, hand over your mod rights to someone else...you're a terrible mod.

Not to mention the 6c98 installer crashing on both the iBook and G4 when trying to upgrade 10.1.5. The archive and install method worked fine, but that black screen with white text that said: "Installer unexpectedly quit, code 0. restart your computer" was a tad harrowing.

Sheesh, cut him some slack. If you don't want to read it, don't click it.

Heh..ok, guess the title isn't so descriptive. But still, ease up

Well, since you guys have asked so nicely, I'll lock this.

But I stand by my words. This iMac was at the Apple Store at Tysons Corner, VA. As you enter the store, it's on the table to the right of the cash register, closest to the front of the store. Go there yourself if you don't believe me. It's the one with the sans-serif "iMac" on the monitor rather than the Apple Garamond typeface. Go there, do an About This Mac, and click on "Version 10.2" in the window that pops up. And then look at the build number.

And I still say there was more than one 4K78.
