DO any of the OSX updates also include (hard drive) firmware updates for the internal IDE drives?

The reason I ask is because many users are reporting disk failures (mainly Firewire but also IDE) soon after updating to 10.3.9

I wonder if the updater is doing something to the HD fimware...

I highly doubt it.

First of all, there are too many different hardware versions out there...

Second (and correct me if I am wrong), I have never seen any kind of firmware update made available for a hard drive - just optical drives...

Third, it seems like it would be a very risky practice, IMHO.

"Mommy Mac" - 13" Macbook, 2.4GHz C2D, 2GB, 160GB
"Baby Mac" - 15" PB, 1.5GHz, 1.5GB, 80GB
64GB iPod Touch (4th gen)

Yeah, I think I may have mis-spoken when I used the term firmware. Maybe I meant to say disk driver.

Remember in the old (OS9) "Drive Setup" application there used to be an option to 'update disk drivers'? That's the kind of thing I'm talking about.

Those drivers are not the drive's own drivers (the kind of thing that lives in firmware), but rather the drivers used by the OS. (Those are just data on the disk.)

Firmware updates for hard drives are rare, but have existed before. I know Apple's done it 2 or 3 times.

The firmware updates for external FireWire drives are supplied by the manufacturers themselves, though you can also get them from FireWire depot (click the Firmware Info link at the top of the page):

It is theoretically possible for OSX updates to include firmware, but I don't think Apple has ever actually done that before. Even back in the OS9 days, firmware updates were usually issued separately from OS updates.
