So I'm running an ALPB G4 1.25 w/ 1gb ram 5400rpm

I split most of my computer time between the web and Aperture. Obviously I don't need much more for the web. But I am in dire need of a quicker aperture. For example, I've shot over 8,000 RAW photos in the last 9 months.

I am pretty set on buying the next MBP 15 Matte (maybe with a 20" cinema) that is released with MAX ram. I know there is no one on this forum who can speculate on what that mbp will be able to do. So i'll as a conservative question.

How much more powerful at Aperture with 3gb of ram is today's top of the line core-duo?

Has anyone made a similar upgrade? While I type this, Aperture is exporting 28 photos, estimated time: 23min

Thanks for your time and responses.

They say Aperture feels sluggish even on Mac Pros. Adobe LightRoom is said to be "snappier" on all systems.

I have a MBP 2.0 CD with 2GB of RAM. On my Mac Mini 1.42 GHz, Aperture was unusable. While by no means "snappy" Aperture is definitely usable on the MBP. Exports take a few seconds per image.

I've just exported 35 Master files on my MacBook 1st Gen with 2GB of Ram and it took 25 odd secs.

files were a mixture of..

3 x tiff @ 45.6MB each
6 x psd @ 22.6MB each
26 x CR2 @ 6.7MB each

I hope that helps?

Hello

I was in the same boat as you. I did not have 8000 raw files but roughly around 5600
and aperture was just not woprking they way i wanted.

I have been using lightroom lately and overall it feels more responsive and faster then aperture.I am running both programs on a 17" macbook pro 2.33,2gb of ram.

I personally feel like lightroom is great for teh price they are currently asking for.

If you dont mind me asking-what type of camera are you using? and what type of pictures do you usually snap?

ok so it seems that after upgrading - aperture should really fly. That will be nice - thanks for all the feedback. I may demo lightroom. But i have a pretty comfortable workflow with aperture. I guess i could check it out. (Hate to buy both)

Switch to Lightroom if you want snappyness. Aperture is a slug even on Apple's demo machines.

I hate to say this, but Aperture doesn't seem to fly on anything right now. It was almost unusable on my Powerbook and just decent with my MBP.

There's a 30 day trial for Lightroom right now. It runs well on the old G4 processors and is a champ on the Core2Duos. It was a change in my workflow, but for the better.
