I think this thing is supposed to work with Windows.
I have a Dell5150 with built in 1394 Firewire. It seems to think it's a "network" connection, but, my external harddrive works ok with it, so, it seems to function ok as a regular old Firewire connection.
Basically, I plug in the iPod, and... nothing.
thanks...
I'm using the latest iTunes.

you need to download the ipod updater from apples site, you need obviously the windows version from here:
http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
This will re-format your ipod for windows use, this will also erase everything on your ipod so backup if you need it.

Hmm. Still does not see it.
(I'm running the updater from C:/ProgramFiles after it installed it)
My iPod battery is dead. Do I need to give it a little charge maybe? I was hoping ye olde firewire port was gonna handle that...

Yeah, it needed a slight charge.
Does not seem like the recharging feature works though.
It's a small plug on the computer to a large plug on the iPod.
Does the smaller plug not charge?
With my Macs it was large plug to large plug and it always charged.
I hope this "restore" completes before the battery dies again. I only put about a 10 minute charge into it. :shifty

That's funny.
I've been here since 2002 and have less posts than you do.
I don't exactly think I was "post hiking," it never even occurred to me.
This has always been a strangely uptight forum.
I do appreciate the help though, the updater was exactly what I needed.

A 4-pin firewire port (which is what most windows computers seem to have) does not supply power, so the iPod can't charge from it.
