I have a 20" iMac G4 running the latest version of Tiger. Safari response time has steadily declined since Panther days. Also, my general app response seems to have slowed down some too - noticable.

I have Onyx installed and ran everything under the sun to try and speed things up but to no avail.

NOTE: I have NOT reformated the iMac ... ever . When I installed Tiger, I didn't perform a clean install.

Will wiping the hard drive clean and reinstalling Tiger from scratch help? Or is it primarily Safari that I'm noticing and that's just the way it is?

Have you tried repairing permissions? Whats the S.M.A.R.T status on your hard drive?

Repairing permissions? Haha

When you say response time has decline, 99RedSi, can you be a bit more specific? You mean it takes longer for pages to display, and if so, how much longer? Are you sure it's not an Internet connection issue?

Yes..Onyx does this...didn't help at all.

I'm not sure what the S.M.A.R.T. status is...where can I find this out?

I'll run some timings tonight and post them.

I run a standard Cable internet connection and my Windows 2000 laptop (500Mhz P3) is faster than Safari's response time!!

If stuff is slowin' down, get more RAM. Not kidding, you almost need at least a Gig with how OS X runs right now.

Bob..check my sig .. I have 1.25GB RAM .. I think that is enough to run Tiger and a moderate, steady pace.

Most likely, this is a problem with Safari's icon cache getting too large ( >1MB). The solution is to clear it. When the Safari web icon cache gets too large, web browsing will slow down considerably.

go to:
Macintosh HD>your user's home folder>Library>Safari>Icons

Move the folder named "icon" to the trash and empty it, don't worry because Safari will create a new "Icons" folder. Now Safari should be up to speed again.

Post back and let me know if it works out.

I also am interested in knowing how that works. I used to have a G4 powerbook that was horrendously slow on the internet. I would try it on my MacBook but Safari runs fine and I use FireFox anyways,
