Anyone think this might be out to ease the pain of shipping the mini world wide? They still probably can't meet the demand.

I, for one, think that Apple has a good change of including the dock in the 20 gigger.

Edit: Oops. I was wrong (about them all including the Dock). 20 GB does not include the Dock by default. Tech specs page is kinda misleading.

Darn, no dock on the 20.

Looks pretty nice tho... I'm turning 20 on Thursday so maybe I'll just have to ask the rents for a 40 gigger

There's a new one (iPod Updater 7-15-2004), but it only includes 2.2 for the 3G (which is the one it already has).

The 20 Gig ships without the dock, the remote, and the case. All are included with the 40. Bought separately, these things add up to $119. So if you want them it really makes sense to buy the 40GB iPod.

Wow, that's nice of Apple to include. They need to update the "Store" page to reflect this though...

Old docks won't work according to Apple.

Here is the AppleStore info for the old Dock
Supports iPods with Dock Connector. Does not support iPod mini or new iPod with Click Wheel (20GB or 40GB). For an iPod Dock accessory kit for iPod with Click Wheel, use M9602G/A iPod Dock kit.
I guess the 1mm doesn't let it fit snug. I'm sure it'll work fine with a little "engineering" though.

This is the first time the price of the iPod is really really interesting. Almost in the realm where I would buy.

Am I the only person who's not impresssed at all? Other thenn better bettery life and a click-wheel, and a small hard drive upgrade... where is the improvement?

It's the same price as before. $299 for the base model with no accesories. The difference in what you get for $299 is barely noticable.

It also still has the horrible scratch-prone metal backing. Ugh.

Not that I'm saying it sucks or anything, It's just more of the same. I guess I was just hoping for some more drastic improvements/changes.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

That's no different from *any* store I know that will buy used items: they'll pay you 1/2 of what they think they can sell it for. You're getting a guaranteed sale, they're covering their loss if they can't sell it. If you don't like their terms, sell privately for more money.

I'm interested because of the reduce in physical size, larger HD, upgraded wheel and battery. Battery was key for me. It's still not in the 20 hour range (like some MP3 players) but it's long enough to get through a work day or VERY long trip (away from electricity).

If they say 12 hours, it really means 6 hours of real world use.

I've nnever timed my iPod reallly, but I know that I've never gotten 8 hours of play out of that thing in one go. It feeels more like 4 or 5 at most.

Remote and Case are not included with the new ones apparently.

Here is a letter a guy from MacRumors.com got:

To Our Valued Apple Customer:

Thank you for your recent order for an iPod.

Apple is thrilled to announce an exciting new generation of iPods! Your
order has been automatically upgraded to the new generation 40GB iPod,
at no additional cost. Your order will ship on or before 7/21. To check
the status of your order, please visit: <www.apple.com/OrderStatus>.

Since the Carrying Case and Remote are not included in the new 40GB
iPod package, we have added the following products to your order,
at no additional cost. They may ship separately, and will ship on
or before 7/23.
M9129G/A - IPOD CARRYING CASE
M9128G/A - IPOD REMOTE AND EARPHONES

If your order included unshipped iPod accessories that are not
compatible with the new generation iPod, we removed these items from
your order. For accessories that already shipped, we have credited
your order for the amount charged.

If you paid with a credit card or an Apple Loan, the credit to your
account should be processed within the next five business days. Once
the credit is sent to your account, it will be posted according to the
issuing banks procedures. If you paid via cashiers check, money order,
or wire transfer, a refund check will be mailed to you upon shipment
of the remaining items on your order.

Thank you for choosing Apple!

So....

just checked out the iPod updater review on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/

The iPod mini doesn't get the ability to make "on the go playlists"?

I figured it was new enough to get this feature.

Good upgrade. Why do something drastically "out there" when all they needed to do was play it safe and improve on the #1 player in the world.

I think it's because some of the other players are starting to catch up while others are even starting to improve upon the general design. I'm not saying anyone has hit a home run, but they are getting ever closer.

It seems Apple is now ready to offer a third iPod like device considering they now only have two options. I'm guessing they may also offer a 60GB option before all that much longer.

The key to Apple's strategy at this point is price/economic strategy. When they analyze how many additional customers would appreciate airport/wifi/bluetooth/color screen/iphoto compatibility/toaster overn/action figure maker/paperclip dispenser type addons, the cost of developing and building them into the ipod far exceeds the additional revenue generated by sales just BECAUSE of those upgrades...thus it is not profitable for them. If they can lure more people in with a lower price, they will do that. Its all about one thing: profit.

I found this interesting bit in a Reuters article...

Joswiak shot down market rumors of 60-gigabyte models in the pipeline. "We have no plans in regard to announcing 60-gigabyte models," Joswiak said. "We are trying to create a much more compelling lineup with two models for 20 and 40 gigabytes at extremely compelling prices."

When it was brand new I could get about 9 hours from my 2G iPod. That's why they say "up to 11 hours" since it completely depends on how you're using it; they can't guarantee that the person who's constantly skipping around and changing tracks will get the same battery life as the person who sets a long playlist and just leaves it alone.

I think I can get around 8 hours these days, but I always recharge it over lunch so who knows? It's not needing a new battery as far as I can tell, and I've been using it daily for a year and a half.

Like a breakout box with speakers that you can dock the iPod in? Doesn't Altec make something like this for 150 or 200?

You just listed them. Along with those, there's Shuffling from the main menu, multiple on-the-go playlists (as well as being able to delete songs from them on-the-fly), and speed control for audio books.

It's the same price as before. $299 for the base model with no accesories. The difference in what you get for $299 is barely noticable.
No, the 20GB is now $100 cheaper.

It also still has the horrible scratch-prone metal backing. Ugh.
Agreed.
