Anybody done this? Where can I get a Core Duo for a good price? Is it difficult to crack open the Mini and do this upgrade? I'm pretty competent around PCs (been building my own for 20 years now)

Yes, many people have done it. Some have even upgraded to (pre-production samples of) Core 2 Duo. Newegg has the chips with good prices; I think the 1.833Ghz makes the most sense in terms of performance/price. ifixit.com has the guides to take minis apart.

Thanks for the info/confirmation. I agree that the 1.83 looks like the best bet.
I never considered a Mini before but have a chance to buy a used one for a decent price.
