I had a external FW drive, I dont use it much, couple of things I would like to accomplish here:
on boot, unmount the thing
somehow, other than disk utility, tell it to mount on demand.

For what purpose do you unmount it on boot? You could possibly create a script using the Terminal version of Disk Utility. Note that There are ways to selectively hide volumes from the Finder. If that's what you're interested in, check out the Unix forum.

Why don't you want to use Disk Utility to mount it?
You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

try this apple script:

you can put it into your script menu or open it with Quicksilver, so it is quite an easy way to access your unmounted disks.

Why don't you just leave it turned off when you're not using it? My FW drive is off most of the time. When I need it I turn it on and it mounts. When I don't need it I eject it and turn it off. The few times I reboot the drive is off and it doesn't mount. Simple.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
