Yeah I can't figure that out. It almost hints like they wanna make the Nano the widescreen iPod because it has the most market penetration.

I hope it gets a widescreen, and gains streaming audio/video to AppleTV or any video display.

It will be interesting to see if they change the spec before it comes to Europe, Edge was never very popular here and and only the cheapest most basic phones are not UMTS now, UMTS is a lot faster. By the time the iPhone is launched here in the 3rd quarter Edge will seem like stone age (in fact it probably already is)

For some people that's the deal maker. Having 30 gigs over 4 gigs for half the price, not to mention a smaller form factor is what some people want.

I'm sure there will be a G6 iPod video with the similar specs and screen, just w/o the phone capability. There will be plenty of users that have to stick with a different cellphone provider but still want a new iPod video.

The iPods also got video out but I can't see them keeping it at 4:3 ratio. If they make it widescreen though what happens to the wheel?
Perhaps it will be much like the iPhone without the phone.

Probably ~500Mhz (+/- 100Mhz) Xscale. GMA950 consumes way too much power for a phone; it's probably a graphics chipset designed for phones (I know nVidia has a few).

That's my guess.
All the Core Animation of the iPhone and it's touchscreen, but just for Music, Movies, and Photos and a big hard drive. It'd be nice if they keep the look the same, I like the new look.

So you could theoretically hold 7 movies on the iPhone.
Edit: This is what confuses me. The 'iPod' made for watching movies can't hold many.

I think it's awesome. The price is a bit daunting, but it'll come down in the next year or so.
I'm skeptical on the battery life since most products I know don't live up to the projected battery life. It's the multi-tasking that makes the phone unique, functionally speaking. Multi-tasking = more power usage than the "5 hours of talking time" stat would imply.
And really, does anyone want a Rev 1 OSX phone? I mean, OSX is great but really...let's think about it. Rev 1? I'll wait.
As long as it has a great Restore CD, I don't care about the "ZOMG I gotta phon virusss!" inevitability.
But I'm also sure that all our concerns will be addressed and resolved eventually. Seems like a nice 2008 Birthday present to myself.
The only real question at this point is: can you hear the fans spinning or are they whisper quiet?

Would a hard drive based phone reduce battery life noticeably?

That has nothing to do with whether it is unlocked or not. Remember, Cingular charges existing customers an extra couple hundred dollars if you buy a phone while you're still in contract. Existing customers would only get the phone at this price if they were outside of their contract and paying month-to-month.

Cingular sucks here too. Over the last 9 years I've had Cingular three times, and I've always gotten poor coverage. Cingular is also very expensive, as they charge you an arm and a leg for anything additional (Internet, SMS, etc). They really skimp on their offerings too. For instance, the normal voice mail plan only allows people to record 30s messages, and you can only store a few of them. With Sprint I have 4m long messages and I know I can store at least 20-30 of them. I used to work selling cell phone services, and Cingular is the LAST one I would recommend here.

And as an additional bonus, maybe it would get better battery life
That would be pretty cool, actually. I've always wished that cell phone providers would sell trimmed down versions of their top-end PDAs (Treo, etc). Some people just don't need all that extra functionality. The iPhone is WAY too expensive to be a common household item, in my opinion.
I wonder if Cingular would allow you to activate the phone on a data-only plan. I'm sure a VOIP application will come out soon, reducing the need to have a standard voice plan.

I think it's pretty funny. As soon as Zune comes out, it's already so outdated that we will see them included free in cereal boxes!

Of course, it is twice the price of the Zune and necessitates a cell phone contract. I want to see what features from the iPhone make it into the main iPod line.

Or if they released a slimmed-down version with no phone. Some people do prefer a separate PDA/phone device. The interface is great as a PDA, and if they took out the phone part and made it $200, I know I'd consider getting one.

It actually looked like the brushed aluminum with the Apple logo.
And the camera.

Right now I agree with you. But imagine the same level of evolution that has taken place in the iPod applied to this iPhone.
A few years from now this may be a laptop replacement for many people. When I imagine purchases over the next 5 years I see an iMac and a 3rd gen iPhone, not an iMac and a MacBook.

Just to put it in perspective smart phones by Sony that are even close to this are $1000-$1200.
And they aren't even close.

Nobody, and I mean, nobody. Has PUSH email on their cell over here. Except for a few hardcore business users (who don't pay for this expensive service themselves).
SMS+MMS is the standard.
IMHO Apple should've released an iPhone "light", a less advanced version. The iPhone practically requires you to have a serious data plan. Data plans are A)unavailable with pre-paid cards* B)extreeeeemely expensive C)unlimited data plans simply do not exist in most countries
*I won't be far of if I said that most people in europe these days have a pre-paid card instead of a contract.

I'm pretty sure that data plans will go down in price, be more widely available, and so on. Similar to the fact that there was hardly any music available (other than ripped MP3s) when the iPod came out. Now look at it.

Ya 6 months is a long time and there will be huge interest in this phone so carriers will come out with special plans just for it I am sure.
