Not sure what it is really, but I've lost the desire to read this forum. There's no real substance to any of the posts which means no compelling reason to come here. So, why are all of you still here?

I thought the spaghetti was only available in the Mod Lounge!

I still come here because it's sort of like coming back to the small town you grew up in. Most of the regulars are still around and some have moved on to bigger and better forums. I'm not part of any other Apple forums and I don't feel like re-starting.

I'm not sure, as this new format really blows! I can see myself coming here less and less.

I still pop in from time to time, but this new format is somewhat odd and uncomfortable. Like when Jerry Seinfeld had those new cabinets installed in the kitchen.

1) pop in to just "see" if there are changes, be it the design/interface, or the people

2) i sold an item, so i needed the contact via PMs. but don't anymore.

only person I know in real on here I have their email/phone. so guess, well, not much other then item 1 above.

Haha, solid comparison, couldn't have said it better myself.

I come here because there are a handful of intelligent, helpful, insightful people that contribute to the topics posted. There are however a few turds that seem to lurk around and never go away and serve to just sit here and crap on topics all day, which has made it more and more of a turn off coming here.

Due to the format change, said turds hanging around, and general inactivity in the forums, I have found myself spending more time on the Mac Rumors forums. I really only go there to lurk the more "technical" areas though (Apple TV, MacBook Air, etc)...I don't do any "general forum'ing" there.

I used to come here when I needed to learn Mac related stuff. I think the bajillion sub forums make it harder to find anything I care about.

Guess I'm sad in that I still like the lounge and the Gaming forum, occasionally the Pol lounge.

I joined a few Mac forums when I got my first Mac in Feb 2007. When I joined here I soon left the others.

I only read threads where the title means something, most of the stuff with American culture or politics are unread.

Besides the gaming clan that I'm in, and dpreview for photography stuff, this is the only other forum that I'm part of. I don't do Facebook or Twitter.

I come here, this specific forum as well as to MacNN, because there are real smart people, who often are quirky, which I like, occasionally annoying, which I can put up with, and who all are passionate about either Apple related stuff, as am I, or about other things, many of which I find interesting. This has been a community for me for the past 11 years, after work I check emails and come here for solace from my people intensive profession. Also I have received much generous help with weird problems, and have learned from other's questions and solutions. I love to try and help others as well. As I hear myself write, sounds to me like this is some kind of extended family?

Partly that's because of the number of people around here who don't know how to converse without mockery and insults. Directly abusing other members because they have differing religious or political views is simply a prevailing sign of base character, and it makes it tough to actually see enough common ground to have a discussion. I could make a list of the chief offenders, but they know who they are.

I miss the community. There was a time when this place was tight butthole, tight enough that you could discuss things close to you that you'd really only share with select friends.... yet you'd get honest answers and intelligent responses. There was also a lot of variety, controversy, and ... for me, I was learning a lot. From a lot of people.

That would mean something if you hadn't been constantly bitching for the past 11 years about how much this place sucks.

I don't think Rob's complaint is how much this place sucks, but more about how much it has changed.

It's sucked since the mods starting banning anybody with a strong opinion of anything. They want lemmings here.

Same old tune, huh? It's not that you were banned for being rude, abrasive, obscene, or purposefully aggressive, it's just that you had an opinion of something. It's the same thing you've been saying for 11 years, yet you keep coming back.

Amen!

I don't think they really understand that maintaining order is important but not at the expense of maintaining or helping enourage membership numbers and activity.

It seems they just want to do whatever is necessary to make their jobs easier.

Do they take membership and activity and participation for granted?

What do the Mods do to actually ENCOURAGE business here?

Having you banned was a shame because you have real fans and followers.

And I know that as a mild-manered poster who is confined to the Lounge I bring less excitement to the forum and what many people respond to is excitement.

When a Mod never hears from posters who find the place dull and who just leave and seldom or never return they can be lulled into believing their most important consideration is to quell the whiny shrill insecure voices of the complainers who want this place to be like a sedate little tea room or a middle aged Boy's Club. Why aren't there more women? Why not more minorities? More young posters. Especially Blacks and Asians and Hispanics.

He's a STAR. And some posters who don't shine as brightly are threatened by that kind of stardom. As for why he (and others, including myself) keeps coming back, why do YOU keep coming back? Because you like this place. And just because you MIGHT have a longer uninterrupted tenure here than Rob, it doesn't mean you bring more to the forum. So, why can't he have more of a claim to this place than you? He's sacrificed to participate here, whereas SOME posters merely go along without doing much of note except just show up and post an opinion once in a while that no one disagrees with and no one really cares about, either way and few people remember.

The Mods would love for ALL the posters to be well mannered and not raise anyone's eyebrows.

But is that what's best for MacNN or is that merely what serves the Mods' preferences best?

I think the place is better off with Ca$h here than not.
