Metro is 'saying' its to conduct 'safety checks' on the power couplings to the 3rd rail.
So why are there reports of dogs in the tunnels?
ISIS threat?
At least thats the rumor from several sources.

So why are DOGS in the tunnels? Normally they would do that on weekends.

"Bad electrical wiring" dogs?
During my senior year in HS (1979), we were told not leave our classrooms. The Phoenix PD was bring a "bomb" dog because someone called and said there was a "bomb" in a locker. What did this "bomb" dog find? A bomb? No, the dog found a dime bag of weed!

Is 'because he's nuts' an inappropriate reply here?

Sounds fishy is all. That and an unnamed security source said something else was up.

The Washington Post says that Metro found 26 wiring defects (similar to the one that caused Monday's fire), and has completed repairs on most of them. The Post says service will resume at 0500 Thursday.
Yes, dogs can be used for locating electrical problems (for example, they can smell a little bit of ozone that we wouldn't notice), but they could also have been there so their handlers could take advantage of empty stations for some training. Not everything that happens in DC is as dire and scary as some folks might think.

So the generalized threat to east coast cities security briefings were just a smokescreen? Sure.

I didn't say that. I said that you don't need to freak out when you see something out of the ordinary. When there are other things going on, that's a different issue.
But... K9 handlers will also take any opportunity they can get to train their dogs in any setting. So the K9s were not necessarily because of the "generalized threat" briefings.

I got my initial info that something was up from one of our security guys. It was suspicious that they closed Metro down on a weekday instead of weekends like they have for 20+ years.

Suspicious, maybe. But actual fires inside the stations are worse than suspicious. And there were some vocal calls for Metro to "do something about" the fire risk, since last week's fire wasn't the first by a long shot.
There could indeed be a connection between the "generalized threat" and emergency repairs that could keep 26 different stations from burning, but I guess since I don't live anywhere near DC, my own type and intensity of paranoia doesn't mesh with life there.

I hope it's clear that my banter was intended to be light hearted, rather than to minimize the tragedy in Brussels.
On the other hand, I also hope profusely that there was really no connection between the DC Metro shutdown and intelligence about the Paris bombers' cell.
