Ok, I got a little problem, I seem to remember this happening before (a couple years ago maybe?). I can't reposition ANY icons/folders/documents in the finder, not the dektop icons, not anything in a folder, not even the trash can. I can do a "clean up" and they'll move, but I can't just move them with my mouse.
Also, auto-snap isn't turned on. And I don't remember installing anything new.
Things I tried:
1) trash finder prefs
2) rebuild the desktop
3) zap the PRAM
4) Run Disk First Aid (no problems found)
5) trash more preferences
6) multiple reboots
I am running OS 9.1 with Mac OS X installed (but not running) on a seperate drive.
Machine is an original G4 450 AGP with 1 GB of RAM.
Anyone have this happen? Any suggestions/fixes?
Thanks.

Have you gone under the View menu and looked at your prefs for "View Options?" Make sure "Icon Arrangement" is set to none.

yes. even if it was set, I would still be able to move them, just on the grid.

Well if the view option is set to arrange by name, then you wont be able to move them.
If you open a window, does it have the little four folders arranged in a grid in the top left corner?
If it does, then some icon arrangement options have been set.
Try looking in Edit->Preferences, click the views tab, and then from the pop-up select icons.
Try setting that to none.
The settings in there control the standard views for every window.
But, even if you have someting there to arrange them, if you set the desktop views to no icon arrangement, you should be able to move them. Hmm.

Hi geek77,
You might try replacing the Finder itself. If you have the OS 9.1 CD, you can make a copy of the one in the System Folder on that CD. When you replace your Finder, it probably would be a good idea to trash the Finder Preferences again too.

I had this happen to me last week.
For me it proved to be an extension conflict. If you have Conflict Catcher this should be an easy fix. If not, try starting with a base set of extensions and see if the problem goes away. I know you said you haven't done any installs lately but this test is an easy one to do.
Please keep us informed with your progress.
Good luck!

thanks for the help everyone. I do indeed use conflict catcher and it narrowed the problem down to these extensions:
EXTN CarbonLib
EXTN N2MP3 Extension
EXTN Open Transport
EXTN Open Transport ASLM Modules
EXTN Shared Library Manager PPC
EXTN StuffIt Engine
CTRL True Finder Integration
Well, I turned open transport, shared library and carbonlib back on and the problem is gone, but I think it might have something to do with a conflict between one of those and the remaining extensions in the list (n2mp3, stuffit, TFI). I didn't have the problem until after a software update from the control panel. I'm too lazy right now to try and figure it out. Maybe later. Bye.

Probably between CarbonLib and True Finder Integration. Check this article out at MacFixIt.
Thanks for re-posting and letting us know.
