Agreed.
I don't think this was a particularly good year for albums though.

that, new danger and the black album are the big hip hop albums for the year.
i'd still say that smile is the one to be reckoned with though.

Dissapointing year for me. The only real album that I've loved from start to end was Iced Earth's The Glorious Burden. I even made a couple, I mean about 9 sigs from some of the album art (I wish Hao would let you buy prints). But the album was barely put out this year (Early January I believe).
Sigh. Reise Reise wasn't as good as I wanted it to be and Megadeth's "The System Has Failed" was a big step forward, but still wasn't a Rust In Peace album like I wanted.
This year's been a big bore. And so was last year with my favorite band's worst album. Ever. In fact, hoping for a good year in metal is like hoping for Congress to not raise their salaries.
No matter. Here's to hoping for an exciting year in metal next year.

Actually, The Black Album came out last year. The Grey Album qualifies though. It was more than a little uneven, but definitely one of the most interesting albums of the year.

Lemme put it this way: The odds of an awesome rock album next year is between none and not likely.
Given the current MTV/VH1 crap, the networks shoving bad bands down our throat (GC for example), and less than spectacular label support, things aren't looking up for the genre. It's not like we're going to get a Led Zep IV, a Paranoid, a Machine Head (Deep Purple), or Master of Puppets anytime in the near future.
I'm not sure there's one rock group worthy of my money that was formed after 1990. It's like they all died.
If I had to rate this year, I'd give it a 4/10.

sadly, it is their last album, but Orbital's Blue Album (iTunes) is the best of the year, as far as i'm concerned. the new Interpol is also good.

Yikes! I am an orbital fan, but that album was just WAY out there! I kept 2-3 tracks off it, it just didn't flow or have beauty like their albums normally do. To each their own, though...im glad you like it!

I never cared for techno. Sounds to robotic and not virtuosic enough.
The only one I ever liked was Andy Hunter.

I think Techno is a bit... Blahh. I prefer trance or house. Trance usually includes voices and a melody. House is very upbeat with some sort of melody and less repetition.
As for electronic music being virtuosic, I think that the electronic musicians are just as gifted as a pianist. Alot of the melody is done on keyboards. Its no different from how they make pop songs now a days. Computer!

True, but I want to see guys playing bass, lead, drums, etc.
Besides, my sound is heavy, and electronic music doesn't qualify.

I've begun to appreciate the depth of texture and complexity that electronic music can provide. However as a hobbyist musician I can appreciate chops as well. Both are difficult, and both can express huge levels of creativity. In my opinion, if it sounds good, whether through some fast licks, or a super atmospheric baseline, I like it.
And when they can do both. I really like it. (Amnesiac, for example).
Guess I'm going to have to pick up that Elliott Smith album.

Archive - "Noise"
Definitely my favorite this year, until somebody convinces me of something better. Somewhere between Pink Floyd, alternative, Trip Hop, and Prog Rock.

Well, If you're into Progressive Metal/Rock there were some great albums this year.
Some of my Favs:
Ayreon - The Human Equation
A Masterpiece, nuff' said
The Jelly Jam 2
Great Prog rock Here, really great
Rhapsody - The Dark Secret
Hard to get into, some people call this Film-Score Metal, anyways, I dare call this a masterpiece to.
Christopher Lee is in this to (storrytelling)

FUNERAL is one of my yearfavourites, as well.
I quite liked NickCave/BadSeeds "Abattoir Blues / Lyre of Orpheus" as well. A very enjoyable return to the material from those guys that's always tingled my spineparts.

Bah, you guys need to start listening to some good music!
P.S. Muse's Absolution was 2003, not 2004. Sorry for us North American fans who got it late, but those of us on top of the ball just ordered it from Britain. Your vote sucks.
Best 2004 pop/rock albums:
Isis Panopticon
The Walkmen Bows + Arrows
Modest Mouse Good News for People Who Like Bad News
The Arcade Fire Funeral
Brian Wilson SMiLE
Death From Above 1979 You're a Woman, I'm a Machine
Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand
Interpol Antics
Best 2004 Hip-hop albums by a white Newfie who doesn't listen to much hip-hop:
K-Os Joyful Rebellion
The Streets A Grand Don't Come for Free
Dizzee Rascal Showtime
Ummm...yeaaaaaaaah. Riiiiiiiight. I've been busy the last few months and I'm sure I missed some good stuff in there somewhere....

I can't believe you think The Vines' album is awesome! They (or maybe he) is undoubtably one of the biggest wastes of talent in the business today! From Highly Evolved and Autumn Shade, to absolute crap. Uhhhhhhhhhhgh.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine
The Stills - Logic Will Break Your Heart
Sparta - Porcelain
Mastodon - Leviathan
Interpol - Antics
I think next year will be a lot better. New material from Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, The Mars Volta, Queens Of The Stone Age and (hopefully) Tool.
