I've read on a few sites that one can use the following terminal command:

defaults write com.apple.dock showforeground 1

to make the Dock show a blue triangle next to the active application (triangles next to background inactive applications remain black). This hack appears not to work under 10.1.4. Whassup?

It worked in OS X 10.0.x, but was disabled in 10.1.x.
