yes, i do run gentoo on my desktop & wintel laptop (sold to pay for PB). word of caution, print out the install doc. u will need it. follow it to the dime. makes your install easier if u do.
the total installation & configuration will depends on what packages you compile & what stage you decide to use.
i always use stage 1. its a long process but everything is optimized to my system proc....
my install time for a fully operational gentoo box is around 1.5 - 2 days. depends what packages i decide to add.
with gentoo, you are compiling everything. my desktops was a dual p3 1Ghz.
YMMW though....
when doing major package complilation. do it overnite. KDE & xfree86 does take sometime to compile....
ever since i got my 800 DVI, i rarely ever use gentoo anymore....
the bonus of Gentoo is its speed & power of emerge.....
oh yeah. if u dont install gentoo on your 1st try. dont fret. most ppl get it right after their 3rd or so tries or even longer.
