Macrumors.com has posted the news that both Mac OS X 10.3.3 and Safari 1.2 were seeded to developers today. They didn't mention too much about the changes to the OS though, but improve graphics and OpenGL is great news. Safari 1.2 sounds really really nice now with the improved tap features. I'm sure more news will be out once people start testing this seed. The updates were said to be 75.5 MB in total. I hope to see the complete update list soon for 10.3.3 as well as Safari.

Mac OS X 10.3.3 (7F24) and Safari 1.2 Seeded

Apple has seeded a new version of Mac OS X to developers. Seed 7F24 has been posted with major changes to "Graphics, OpenGL games, USB devices, printing, browsing networks, Cocoa applications".

Of most interest is the inclusion of Safari 1.2 (current released version is 1.1.1).

The newest version of Safari includes a number of significant improvements:

- Ability to "tab" to form elements (buttons, checkboxes, submit buttons)
- The option (on/off) to "tab" to hyperlinks
- Improved download manager with resume
- View dimensions of an image
- Custom cursor support
- Option to open links from applications "in a new tab in the current window"
- Improved performance

These two are welcomed additions indeed. Especially resuming downloads.
- Option to open links from applications "in a new tab in the current window"
We already have that. If tabs are enabled, just set the page to open in current window and it goes into a new tab.

Hmm, custom cursors, I never really liked it when a web site changed the systems cursor when I browse the net on a Windows machine. Luckily it won't change the scroll bar (I hope).

Really? I am thinking with newsNetWire when you tell it to open a link it always does new window. The developer says it is not possible with tabs right now.

And after getting them printed out, wonky (love that one!) or not, you completely lose track of them without header or footer or whatever - and the spilt ink from printing the whole damn background smears over the paper!

After all the discussions on missing Safari printing features in Apple's forums I expected some of the most mourned-about features to show up in the next version. Hm, but what always remains is hope!

I've read that Safari v1.2 only works with 10.3.3 (or later)...I am sure that won't sit pretty with all Jaguar users you may never get another Safari update....

I read that too. well, actually, I saw Safari 1.2 and the 10.3.3 update on a certain BT tracker. And this is where it said that Safari 1.2 needs OS 10.3.3
And no, I didnt download either of them. I'll wait for the final pukka goods from Apple.

OS 10.3.3 update looks to be 75.01mb
Safari 1.2 update looks like 3.77mb, and is build number V125
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

Safari uses webcore to render sites. Webcore is something that is build into the OS. So unless Apple decides to update webcore for 10.2 (which I highly doubt) then Safari is always going to be bound to the newest OS ver.

case and point, you must be running 10.3.3 (that has an updated webcore) to run Safari 1.2.

the part that is open source is the KHTML part. Webcore is Apples. So yes, Apple would need to release any source for code changes they made to KHTML but not the whole webcore source. webcore is a mix of KHTML and proprietary code that Apple uses.

Are any more DVD writers supported in 10.3.3?

I'm thinking of the NEC ND-1300A drive in particular.

It's about time Apple pulled its finger out on this!

Yes, sorry for the confusion; however, we'll find out how OW 5 handles things since it supports both Jag/Panther...

Hopefully some of Hyatt's improvements make it in this - specifically support for printing page breaks.

If they do add header/footers, I hope they have some way to turn 'em off, too!

Any faster? How is memory usage? How are the new features? Can you give a review of the differences/performance compared to v1.1.1?

those are features I haven't looked into a great deal. Its 1am, I'll throw something up on the web tomorrow morning. But by then who knows Apple-X may have reviewed it, they always jump ontop of this kinda of thing.

Safari still needs some work

Safari open, idle, two pages loaded in tabs:
+-80% CPU usage

In 10.3.2 with Safari 1.1.1
5 tabs open no more than 5% CPU usage.

Apparently Safari 1.2 can be made to work if you extract webkit.framework from the 10.3.3 updater.

There is no resume function. The rumour sites have got this confused with 'reload'. Pressing the orange button merely starts the download from scratch again in my experience (however this could change).

Umm, as I asked above, is there any sign of a fix for the FireWire issues a lot of users are experiencing?

I love it when updates come out. Can't wait until the final version of both updates are out, I'll be one of the first to download and try it again. I've had pretty good luck with it so far, that and I keep my OS healthly always, so I never have any problems in my OS after updates. At least, not yet, but oh well, I guess I just like being the first, just to make sure it'll be working right for you guys I guess.

I think the rendering speed is ok, but I don't see any difference, because I'm on Dual 2 Gig, and it's always fast.
