Has anyone tried booting from an OS 9 CD since installing Jaguar?

Maybe my CD is bust, but I found that however many times I tried the old 'hold down C as you boot up' it didn't work. Has Apple actually disabled this?

Somebody else try, please! If this is the case - I don't want to fly off the handle before I know - then it is disgraceful.

For me personally, I have two partitions on my disk, and I can't remove the 2nd partition using the OS X install CD (could this be the world's least useful OS installer CD?).

This means I'm effectively stuck with 2 partitions. Bugger..

Have you installed the OpenFirmware password? If so, you won't be able to boot from a CD by holding 'c' at startup. Try restarting and holding option. You might be able to startup from CD that way.

No I don't have the OpenFirmware password set.

I tried holding down 'option', and only my OS X partition showed up. I dug out a copy of OS 9.0.4, and that failed to show up aswell.

Added to which, I can't install OS 9 from within OS X, meaning I basically can't have OS 9 at all right now...

Remember, it's got a be a version of OS 9 NEW ENOUGH to boot your machine...

(As an aside, if it doesn't show up in the Startup Disk prefpane when inserted, you've got other problems)

I take your point about the OS version, and I can't remember whether my TiBook 500 came with 9.0.4 or 9.1.

The 9.1 CD shows up in my Startup Disk pane ok, and it has the proper System Folder logo. After restarting with it I got an icon that looks liked a folder for a split second, before it booted me into Jaguar.

There's no problem with my hardware, otherwise I wouldn't be able to boot into the Jaguar installer.

I haven't been able to boot from an OS 9 CD (or even the OS 8.6 CD that came with my Mac when I bought it) for over a year now.

Whenever I start up with CD in drive and holding 'c' key, I get the "?" question mark diskette icon flashing at me. I have to do a PRAM-zap restart to boot normally after that. Same thing happens if I choose the OS 9 (or 8.6) CD as the startup disk in System Preferences. Boo! Hiss!

Hmm.. that's weird, both ways are working perfect for me. Last week, I've installed OS 9.1 on my PMac G4/350 in order to do some testing.

Well there is an option that needs to be activated whenever you install OS X.2, that allows you to boot from OS 9. It is deactivated by default. Not sure if it is related but thought I would mention that.

I have successfully booted up from an OS 9.2.2 installer CD. Maybe Jag won't accept 9.1 or earlier.

Same here. Booted to OS 9.1 fine.

I did have some trouble on an iMac though. Boot with Option key held down. Then put the CD in (to open, eject key on keyboard or F12). Then hit the refresh arrow. See if that makes it show up. For some reason the iMac wouldn't show the CD untill I did this. Then it was fine.

Thanks for trying, everyone!

It's one of those things - I didn't want to look like an idiot for having a broken CD, but it seems that others have had glitches...

I'm intrigued by the comment:
"Well there is an option that needs to be activated whenever you install OS X.2, that allows you to boot from OS 9. It is deactivated by default."

Can anyone elaborate on that?

Not sure if this is what the previous poster was referring to, but...
If you use Disk Utility to erase a disk/partition, there is a checkbox for "Install OS 9 Drivers." It's unchecked by default. If you erase and do not install the OS 9 drivers, then you can't access that disk/partition while booted up in OS 9. You can still access it while booted up in OS X and running Classic, though.
